Gunner groaned. “For the love of God woman, please don’t ever call me that again.” His lips landed on mine amidst laughter from both of us and instantly I felt my whole body relax.
“Look at us,” I said as Gunner pulled away slowly. “We sorted out our differences without being mean to each other.”
“Told you, we’re a great team.” He pulled me closer. “I can’t promise I won’t be stubborn again,” he said, his thumb tracingcircles on my palm. “But I can promise I’ll always find my way back to you. Understand you.” The sincerity in his eyes made my throat tight.
“Even when we fight?” I asked.
“Especially then,” he answered, as he dropped his mouth to mine again, this time taking more time. Pressing his tongue against the seam of my lips, urging me to open for him. I was more than happy to, welcoming the kiss.
“We should leave,” I said after what might have been hours, but was probably minutes. “I think Mrs. Wright is still here and she might walk in on us.”
Gunner cleared his throat and smirked. “Yep, I think so. Missy May’s for dinner?”
I thought about it for an instant. “Let’s go to my place.”
“You don’t have to cook dinner, let’s eat out.”
Giving him a quick kiss to his cheek, I winked. “Oh no, honey, what I have in mind would be illegal in Missy May’s.”
With a raised brow Gunner grabbed my hand and had me out of there quicker than I could blink.
Chapter 40
Earned It – The Weeknd
Gunner
The moment that I walked back into Cassidy’s apartment I felt at peace. Happy because for a moment there I thought I’d seen the last of it. My eyes followed her as she moved around the room, hanging her jacket on the back of one of the dining chairs at the small square table. She kicked off the ankle boots she was wearing and pulled her blouse from the waistband of her pants. There was an open book on the armchair by the window, her black glasses on top of it, and a pair of slippers on the floor kicked off haphazardly. On the sofa was a dressing gown and there was a half full glass of milk on the mantle over the fire. Life had continued in this little apartment for the last forty-eight hours and I had missed out on it through stubbornness.
Cassidy turned to me and grimaced. “I’m sorry about the mess. I’ve been a little distracted for the last couple of days.” She dropped her head, a red blush covering her cheeks. “How have you been?”
I shrugged, shoving my hands into my jeans’ pockets. “Miserable.” I snickered. “Shit, two days and we’re both falling apart.”
“I know.” Cassidy beamed at me. “Years of hating each other and then forty-eight hours of frosty relations and I’m a complete mess.”
Taking a step closer to her, I linked my pinky with hers. “Same,” I whispered. “Worse than I imagined.”
We were caught in each other’s gaze for a beat and the atmosphere instantly turned sinful.
As our lips met, the last threads of doubt unraveled between us. My hands cradled Cassidy’s face with a reverence that I felt through to my fingertips, because she was something precious that I feared might disappear. I pressed closer, wanting to erase any remaining distance.
“I’ve missed you,” I whispered against her mouth, the words vibrating between us. “Even though it’s only been a couple of days.”
“I know,” she agreed, her fingers finding the buttons of my shirt. “I didn’t know whether to call you or not.”
I shook my head. “It doesn’t matter anymore.”
Cassidy’s eyes fluttered close as she leaned closer and breathed in. “Can we go to my room now?”
It was what I wanted but almost died inside when I realized I hadn’t brought any condoms with me.
“Hate to break the moment, sweetheart, but do you have any condoms?” I asked with a wince.
She opened her eyes, long lashes fluttering as she took a deep breath. “I do but I don’t want to use them, unless you do. I’m clean, I have birth control covered. But I get it if?—”
“Sounds like fucking heaven to me.” I caught her hands, bringing them to my lips to kiss her fingertips one by one.“But the first one tonight will be slow,” I murmured. “I want to remember everything.”
“The first one?” she questioned.
