I make my way towards the end of the street. I walk down it. I don’t stop till I reach the end. There are trees lining both sides of the road, and a few of the houses have porches on the front, leaving shadows and places for me to hide.

As night falls, I wait for the streetlights to come on and Jacobs lights to turn off. No one else has arrived at the house, but that doesn’t mean someone wasn’t already home. Once the street quietens and the traffic noise becomes almost non-existent, I slip out of theshadows towards Jacob’s house.Jacob…I really like the way his name sounds in my head. I sound it out and get a rush hearing it on my lips. It just sounds…right.

I slip behind the side of the house and round to the back, peering in through the back patio, but the place is in darkness. I check around for open windows, but the house is locked down tight. I sigh, as I haven’t brought my lock pick set or my alarm overrider with me. If I’d thought, I could have slipped home and returned with my equipment, but I couldn’t pry myself away from watching his house… from watchinghim. I slip back out into the night and promise I will be back tomorrow.

Chapter X

It's dark, it’s late. She’s been out all day, and not a word from her. I’ve given her space, but I’m starting to wonder if something has happened to her. I grab my laptop to check the CCTV, and when I hear the door click, she walks in.

“You good?”

She nods, walks straight into the bedroom, and I hear the shower flick on. By the time she’s finished, I’m waiting in bed for her.

“Where’ve you been.”

“I went to clear my head.”

“Feel better?”

“Yeah, just tired.”

She scooches back into my arms, and I nuzzle into the back of her neck and kiss her tattoo. She lets out a weary breath and sighs. She doesn’t reiterate anythingelse, and after a little while, her breathing evens out, and she’s sound asleep. I wrap my arms a little tighter around her and sigh before closing my eyes and drifting off myself.

When we wake, she’s still wrapped in my arms, and I pull her tighter, kissing the back of her neck and the tattoo of my name. “You okay?”

She nods and fidgets back closer to me, and I chuckle. Her body is a comfort to me. We’re all each other has had all our lives, and I used to sneak into her when she was small and wrap her in my arms to stop her crying. It’s now the only way either of us sleeps, wrapped tight around the other. I kiss down her shoulder and smile against her. “Wanna do something fun today?”

“No,” she murmurs.

“Come on. Cinema, bowling, food, arcades.”

“None of it.” She pulls the covers higher and frowns at them.

I pull back from her, and she groans at the loss of my heat and tries to wrap the covers back around her while I chuckle again and rip them back off her naked body, and she shudders. Her skin pebbles, and I bark a laugh at the scowl that greets me.

“Either come with me, or I’m calling Shelley.”

“Call fucking Shelley. You might leave me the fuck alone then!” she barks as I toss the covers back over her.

“Suit ya self.”

I head into the shower. I’d say she’s not a morning person, but she’s not ananythingperson. She’s so stunningly beautiful, but no one ever gets to see it. That permanent scowl and resting bitch face do nothing for her. I get we had a shit time, a terrible upbringing, but we have a life now, too, whereas we didn’t before. Well… kind of. I’m seeing someone. Shelley, her name is. She’s a detective, and Vic does not approve, to say the least. I mean, they’ve never met, but Vic thinks in our line of work, we shouldn’t be fucking law enforcement. I think it’s the best Idea I’ve ever had.

Shelley doesn’t have time for a full-time relationship, and neither do I, but she also gets chatty after sex, and that way, I can keep my finger on the pulse. That thought makes me laugh. The only thing pulsing when I’m done with Shelley will be my dick.

I shower, and Vic’s still in bed. It’s still early, so I give her a nudge, and she groans. “Come meet us tonight at the bar.”

“If I say yes, will you fuck off?”

“Yes.”

“Yes.”

I lean in and kiss her temple. “Text ya later.”

She just pulls the covers over her head and grumbles something unintelligible at me before I head out the door.
