“We’ll need to keep a close eye on her to make sure she dies, but it shouldn’t be traceable back to us.” Xav nods and then grins at me.
“Why are you grinning?”
“I’m just confirming travel plans.”
“To fucking where?”
“Italy.”
“Fuck’s sake,” I grumble and slide my chair back, heading into the bedroom to research her.
I need to figure out her least favourite coffee so she won’t want to drink mine and her favourite coffee so she can’t resist it. Social media will help. Bitches like this always post their crappa-fucker-chino wank cup of shit on there. I bet she posts pics and everything.
I don’t like leaving Jacob alone for so long, so I decide to slip out and check up on him just to give myself peace of mind, as we could be gone a few days, depending on how long she takes to die. Fingers crossed, it’s not long, as I’ve got a man to woo.
I get dressed in my running gear, secure the wig and head out the door.
“Vic?”
“Yup?”
“Where are you going?”
“For a run, then to get one of those stupid coffees she has to make sure she won’t taste the ricin in it. Shall I bring you one back?”
“Sure, why not?”
He frowns, but I slide my earphones in and head out of the apartment. I run straight to Jacob’s and wait for him to come home. It’s almost dark, but he’s not in, so I hang around for a bit. His house is in darkness, but I also know that he’s changed the locks and the code, so it’s not that I can’t get in, but Xav said I shouldn’t anymore. I start worrying when it gets dark, and I know I need to go soon. But I see headlights coming down the road, and I skulk into the shadows.
A police car pulls up, and a uniformed officer gets out. Jacob climbs out of the passenger side and headstowards the door. The officer goes in first once Jacob opens the door and waits for a second, looking around before stepping inside and closing the door. I see all the lights flick on as the officer must be searching the house, and after about twenty minutes or so, the officer leaves. It takes me a second to realise my heart’s racing. Is he in danger? Does he think I would hurt him? Is something else going on? I need to get home to speak to Xav. He needs to talk to Shelley and find out what’s going on.
I run back to the apartment and slam in through the door.
“What the fuck, Vic? You scared the shit out of me.”
“You need to go to Shelley’s. Jacob just got brought home by the police.”
“Vic, you were supposed to stay the fuck away. Were you in the house? Did he fucking see you? Vic?”
“No, I didn’t go near the house. He didn’t see me, no one saw me. Xav, is he okay?”
“Fuck’s sake, Vic. Look, stay put, okay? I will head over to Shelley’s and see what I can find out.” He takes hold of me by my shoulders and stares straight into my soul. “Swear to me you’re not lying, Vic.”
“I swear, Xav. I promise. I went to see him. I never went to go in. I was just outside, as we we’re going away. I just wanted to see him from a distance, but it was dark, and no one was home, so I waited, and the police car showed up. They both got out, and the police searched the house, then left, and I came straight back.”
“That’s all?”
“I swear, Xav, please check he’s okay, I haven’t been in the house since he changed the locks, and that’s the first time I’ve even been near since then.”
He nods and gathers his things. “I will be back as soon as I can, okay? You stay here. I mean it, Vic. Do not leave this apartment till I get home.”
I nod. I mean, what else can I do?
Xav
Chapter XX
I arrive at Shelley’s. It looks like I’m gonna have to apologise for my little outburst the other day, as I need answers for Vic. She’s really not dealing with this situation all that well. As the door clicks open, Shelley’s standing there wrapped up in her fluffy dressing gown, looking like she’s been crying.
