“Did you know…about the twins being part of this, when you started dating them?”
“No.” She sipped her drink. “But it didn’t take long. I was at Rose Cottage, and Chelsea was there, and her brother showed up. He was furious with Andrew, and, well…it came out.”
“Oh, I see.” I paused. “Why was he furious with Andrew?”
“Apart from the fact she’s his student and they were fucking, probably not that ethical, the brother thought Andrew had made a mistake about a hit…a hit on her mother.”
“What!” I couldn’t believe my ears. “They killed Chelsea’s mother?”
“No, no…I said that wrong. Poor woman was already dead, car crash, but her number came up on a phone they’d taken from some asshole. Turned out she was an undercover cop using a fake name.”
“Blimey.” I rubbed my temples. “This is a lot.”
“And Mitch, well, he’s still on the beat, even after years of service, because he keeps pushing it, so Cillian told me.”
“Pushing it?”
“Bending the rules, for Galahad. Doing his own investigations using the police database, not being where he’s supposed to be when he’s supposed to be there, that kind of thing. Knocks him down the career ladder each time he gets his knuckles rapped.”
“I guess.”
“So.” She bit into her cake. “You gonna stick with him now you know all of that?”
I sighed and finished my tea. “I think I knew some of it anyway to be honest, I just didn’t know there were so many of them going on these undercover missions of justice.”
“They’re very loyal to each other.” Again she glanced around. “It was Dalton who saved Mitch, you know, when he got shot.”
“The doctor?”
“Yes.”
“What’s he look like?”
“Er…tall, blond, kind of handsome I suppose. Why?”
“I think I saw him lurking around the hospital when I got there to visit Mitch, after you dropped me off.”
“Possibly, he’ll have wanted to make sure he was getting the best care.”
I leaned forward. Spoke quietly. “Doesn’t it bother you that they carry guns, that they clearly have no qualms about taking out bad guys?”
“After getting kidnapped, no, I’m all for them having guns and taking out bad guys. If they hadn’t that day.” She paused and shuddered. “I don’t know where I’d be or the other three girls who were saved.”
“Three girls?” I raised my eyebrows.
“Yes, two have gone home, to Romania. The third, Sorenna, she’s still at Rose Cottage, can’t go back.” She smiled. “To be honest, I think Jamie is quite happy about that, he seems to have a soft spot for her. Maybe she’ll still be around for the wedding. That would be nice for him to have a plus-one.”
Chapter Twenty
Mitch
“I’m back on duty tomorrow,” I said to Amy as we cooked dinner together.
“What? That’s soon.” She set down the wooden spoon she’d been holding and narrowed her eyes at me.
“I’m going insane sitting here all day.”
“But—”
