I didn’t think I was.

Chapter 7

Wolfe

She came backfrom the druid’s tent in the middle of the night.

I was in bed; I’d been there since the use of my Will. I still felt drained, but I was rested. I felt her enter the house, and then at the bedroom door, she lingered.

Hesitant.

Because of me? Or because of what she’d become?

The power pulsed beneath her skin. She felt…more. But still the same. How was that possible? I could feel the change in her, but I could also feel our mate bond. Firm. Solid. Secure.

Then why did it feel like I wasn’t?

Rowen took a step back, the door closing softly, and I knew she was going to do something stupid, like sleep on the couch. Only we didn’t have a couch because my beta Diesel had wrecked it when he learned of the attack on my pack at Stonefang. My defenseless pack. I sighed and Rowen hesitated.

“Are you awake?”

“I am.” I didn’t sit up. I was comfy lying flat on my back, staring at nothing, the blankets gathered around my waist. Not because I was hot, just because I hadn’t bothered to pull them up.

“I thought you were sleeping,” she said softly, opening the door wider and moving back into the room. “How are you feeling?”

“Like I held an entire pack under my Will for too long, then killed thirteen of them with a single thought.”

The silence that followed could only be described asuncomfortable.

“Should I go?” She sounded unsure. Rowen had never been unsure in her life, or if she had been, she hid it very well.

“Do you want to?”

This was really strange. NowIfelt unsure. One thing I knew throughout all my time knowing her was that I was always sure of my feelings for her, even when I was in denial.

She walked over to the bed and climbed on, lying beside me, on top of the covers. She stared at the ceiling, the same as I did. “Why would I want to go?” she asked me softly. “This is my bed. This is where I sleep. Beside you.”

I smirked in the darkness. “Haven’t done much sleeping beside you recently.”

I heard her huff of laughter. “Childish,” she murmured, but I could hear the smile. Her hand moved, and I felt her fingers brush against my arm. “But true.”

I turned my head to look at her, wolf sight making the dark clearer. Her hair was unbound, her scent was warm, and the familiar vanilla and orchid soothed the rough edges around me.

“How did it go?” I asked gently.

She turned to look at me in the dark. “I don’t want to talk about the druid right now.”

Right. I turned away, my gaze once more on the ceiling. “Okay.”

Rowen moved onto her side, inching closer to me. Her fingers traced over my chest. “I don’t want to talk about the druid right now, because I’m remembering the last time we were in this bed, and that thought and the druid don’t belong in the same headspace.”

I grinned. My hand caught her fingers, bringing them to my lips. “I could fix that for you if you want?” I murmured.

“Aren’t you tired?” she asked softly, moving even closer, seeking out my warmth.

“My wife just hinted she wants sex,” I told her, my tongue licking over the tips of her fingers quickly before kissing them again. “I’m wide awake. Trust me.”

“I…I didn’t?—”
