He nodded and started to let go of her hand.

She took that moment to jerk away from him and make a run for it. She darted toward the end of the alley and out onto the street, straight into the path of a yellow taxi.

Tires squealed. The driver tried to avoid her, but the vehicle slammed right into her, throwing her body up into the air before it came back down to the road with a crunch that made me wince.

"Or that could happen," Boner said.

"Yeah." That took care of that problem.

As if I was in a dream, I watched the driver climb out of the car and step over to check on her. I couldn't hear him but I read his lips when he mouthed, "She's dead."

"I guess I'm going to need to find a new server," I said with a sigh.

After I found Zeus and ended him.

ZEUS

Chef Stabby,I read with some amusement.

Harlow St. James was proving to be a bigger problem than I anticipated. Hypnos should have been able to take care of her. Last night was supposed to be the end of it. No more having to worry she’d sneak in here in the middle of the night and try to cut my throat. Not that she'd get past my security system.

"I’m going to have to take care of her myself," I said under my breath, "Enjoy your last few days on this earth, Chef St. James. They're just about to come to a sticky end."

George Wentworth stared at me. He'd been doing that for the last hour, without blinking. It was starting to become disconcerting.

"You deserved it," I said to the corpse, who lay on the tiled floor, a knife protruding from his chest.

I sat beside him, my arms around my legs, my chin on my knees.

This wasn't the first time I killed someone, but it was the second. The same nausea I experienced after Fred Alonso's death chased me right now. So far, I held on to the contents of my stomach.

Remorse? There wasn't any. Why was I still sitting here while his body was getting cold? I should be getting the hell out of here.

I startled as the door creaked behind me.

I spun around as someone stepped inside. Dressed completely in black, they looked like a shadow, from their shoes, to the mask covering their face. They walked over to look down at Wentworth, shoulders sagging.

"Looks like I was too late."

He pulled off his mask with one hand and let it dangle from his fingers. He was undeniably attractive, with dark hair, dark eyes and a square jaw.

"Sorry, did you have dibs on this?" I asked.

I might as well make light of it. He caught me red-handed. Was he about to call the cops on me? Was I going to have to kill him too? I had five more predators to hunt down and remove. Two out of a list of seven wasn't enough.

He shrugged, the movement so small I almost missed it. "Not particularly. It's good to see him dead."

He tucked his spare hand into his pocket.

"Yeah." I glanced back at Wentworth.
