I think about her question. He better fuckin’ not. If there are any assholes living with Kane, then Sam is coming to my apartment. “I don’t think he has any roommates,” I grunt.
She waves her hand around. “Okay, so why so much food?”
I calm, realizing her thinking. “Right, Well, I’m thinking there’s not a lot of food at Kane’s so you could have a few meals to eat until you’re able to get to the grocery store.”
She leans her head back in her seat and softly whispers, “I don’t see how you’re still single, Elijah Wolfe. The women of Whiskey Run must be crazy.”
My hand tightens on the steering wheel. The truth is, a few women have shown interest in me, but I’ve shut them all down.
There’s only one woman that I’m attracted to, and she’s sitting right next to me. And she’s completely off limits.
CHAPTER 4
SAMANTHA
I sit back in my chair, hand over my full belly.
Since the moment I’ve been here, after using the ladies’ room, I’ve only been allowed to sit with my feet up. Kane and Elijah carried everything in from the car, and Kane insisted I eat on the couch. As soon as I was done, Elijah carried my empty plate away, and now I’m sitting here getting looks from my brother and his friend.
“So… uh…” Kane starts.
I pull my feet off the cushions and plant them on the ground. I hold my hands up. “I promise, I’m going to be out of your hair before the baby comes.”
Kane shakes his head. “You can stay here as long as you want.”
I wrap my arms around myself. “I know, but I’m not going to cramp your style or anything. I’m going to get a job and?—”
“You have a job,” Elijah grunts.
Kane flips his head toward him. “She does?”
Elijah doesn’t look at him. He continues staring at me. “Yes, she does. She’s coming to work for Wolfe Construction.”
I hold my hand up. “Elijah, I can’t…”
He moves to the edge of his chair. “You can. We need the help, and can you really turn down health insurance that starts from day one?”
I sit up a little taller. “You offer health insurance?”
Kane looks over at Elijah but doesn’t say a word.
Elijah nods. “Yes, we do.”
I look at my brother. “Is it going to bother you having me here at your apartment and also at your job?”
Kane claps his hands together. “What? No, of course not. Plus, I’m hardly ever in the office, so you won’t see me a lot. You can stay here as long as you want. I’m not going to let you take my niece to some?—”
Elijah cuts him off. “You’re having a girl?”
I look at him. “Yeah, she’s a girl.”
He nods, scrubbing his hand up and down his face. “Right. Well, I should go.”
I try to stand up, but I’m slow about it. “Let me get my purse. I’ll pay you back for the tow and?—”
Elijah shakes his head and holds his hands up. “I’m not taking your money.”
I grunt as I stand up. “But my car…”
