I take a deep breath, trying to remain calm, my irritation rippling.

HEAVEN: Well, this was the last time I will ever ask you. I’ve told Alessandra, and she will be the one to talk to you next time.

??: WTF! Why would you even tell her? You swore an oath, and a witch can’t break her promise.

I smirk.

HEAVEN: No, we don’t. But Alessandra is of the di Bianco Galdur bloodline. She is my blood sister, and it does not count. By sharing something with her, I did not break any oath.

I look at the phone triumphantly, hoping that shuts him up, but no, he’s still typing.

??: I’d like to see how she gets me to do anything. I’m bored – later.

I scoff and put my phone down. He is insufferable.

I stare ahead, my brow furrowing. Tomorrow I’ll go to Holden’s pack, and then, then I’ll pay this idiot a visit.

A Birthday Party

Heaven

“So does he know you’re coming?” Allie asks me as we sit in the back of Ahren’s car.

“No, I wanted to surprise him,” I reply, smoothing the skirt of my dress. I knew he was having a party, and with a little digging on the internet, thanks to Leo’s secure provider for the supernatural, I saw some people tagging him regarding the party this evening.

“You don’t look sure,” Allie remarks, glancing at Ahren in the front.

I whisper a spell, and Ahren chuckles, knowing exactly what I’m doing, so he can’t hear what is being said.

“You know what Jaddati says, right? When there are only three people in a room, it’s bad manners to whisper?” he asks.

I do, but I’m ok with being bad-mannered. I turn to Allie.

“I’m not. Although I like Holden, and we have chemistry,I’m not ready to take it further. I don’t trust him enough to let him in so quickly. I’ve always been a composed person, and it just… makes me perhaps a little doubtful that he’ll be able to understand me for who I am.”

Allie nods. “So, you think turning up today, he might think you’re ready for more?”

“Kind of?”

She shrugs. “I don’t know, maybe he’ll just realise that there is something between you, and it might even make him more patient towards you wanting to take things slow, while at the same time, realising you do care. The words are yuck, but I might be onto something.”

“No, you’re right. That puts it perfectly. This is the right thing.”

“Yeah, so don’t overthink it,” she says.

“Did you talk to Dante?” I ask her.

She nods. “Yes, last night. There’s something weighing on him, and I just can’t figure out what it is. That prophecy, something is going on — it came to be, and I know he knows.”

“Well, we know he can’t say many things, but we are witches, and as witches, it is our duty to meddle. We are the ones who guide the path, the ones who hold wisdom and knowledge.”

“You sound like an old lady, but you’re right. So, you really think I’ll have a witch name?”

“Yes, I know you do,” I answer without missing a beat.

She tilts her head, her face emotionless. “Well, yours andSienna’s are pretty epic, Mordana and Aldona.”

“Of course they are,” I reply just as Ahren’s phone rings. I remove the spell as Ahren answers it, and Tatum’s voice fills the car.
