“Ty? Are you okay?”
“Dad, something happened to Beau’s car, and we didn’t have brakes. You should have seen her she was awesome.”
“Son, what’s going on? Where’s Beau at?”
“She’s outside. She shot this guy who tried to take her. He threatened to kill me. She told me to call and tell you where we are. She says to send help to us now.”
Fuck.A million things run through my brain, but I ignore it for now. “Tell me where you are,” I demand, even as I wonder where in the fuck Callum and Apex are. Apex and I have buried our hatchet. I’m still uncomfortable with him being so close to her, but I trust Beau. Plus, as much as he cares about Beau, I thought he’d go all out to protect her.
So, where in the fuck is he right now?
Ty finishes telling me where he is, and I realize that they aren’t very far from the school.
“Okay, I have it. I’m going to hang up now, Ty. I’m still too far away, but I’m going to get your Grandpa and the men to come to you, okay?”
“Tell them to hurry, Dad. She said Papaw would know the guy she shot. She said to tell him that the guy’s name is Donald Ray Hyde.”
“I’ll tell him, son. You just make sure to stay safe and do what Beau tells you, okay?”
“Okay, Dad. I love you.”
“I love you too, son. I’ll call Beau back.”
“She’s awesome,” he brags once more.
“Yeah, she is,” I tell him. “I got to go now, Ty. I have to call your papaw.”
“Okay.”
“Love you.”
“Love you,” he repeats.
I hang up and I barely take a breath before I’m telling my phone to call Dad. It rings what seems like forever before he finally answers.
“Hey, Hunter, did you make it back?—”
“Where the fuck is Apex and Callum?” I bark.
“What?”
“Some asshole tried to kill Beau and Ty. The men we assigned on them aren’t there and I want to know why.”
“Okay hold up. Where are Beau and Ty?” Dad asks.
“They’re at the end of the hill before you turn to go into town. Ty said they were over in the grass behind the small hill that butts up against the shoulder of the road. Send men to them now and then tell me why my woman and son don’t have anyone with them.”
“I don’t know, son. That’s something we’ll figure out. Is the man still after them? What’s the status?”
“Ty said she shot him. He said his name was Donald Ray Hyde or something like that.”
“Fuck,” Dad growls.
“Who is he, Dad?”
“I’m going to go to them. I’ll tell you everything you need to know when you get here.”
“I want to know now,” I growl.
