Just as the werewolf is about to close its large maw down on Olivia’s neck, I bring the sharp tip of the blade down onto its neck. Severing muscle and bone from its body. Blood sprays out, gushing all down Olivia’s body. I must have hit an artery.

The werewolf’s body collapses on top of Olivia, trapping her beneath the enormous fur ball. She shoves at the corpse with all her might, trembling and covered in warm, sticky blood. I help move it off her, pulling her out from beneath.

Killing the werewolf will bring repercussions, but if I hadn’t then Olivia would be dead.

“Thank you.” She says, looking up at me with heavy lashes.

I feel a smirk forming along my lips. “It was nothing.”

“Oh yeah? So, I shouldn’t give you a thank you kiss?”

“I’m not saying that.” I lean to take her mouth in mine, but as I’m about to plant a kiss on her, a low agonizing howl comes from where the fallen werewolf’s body is. Turning, I see the other two werewolves.

Olivia yanks the axe out of the corpses’s neck and raises it. “You want to be next?” She asks with a deadly chill to her voice.

“Enough blood has been spilt of my kind tonight. Mark my words, you haven’t seen the last of us.” The werewolf on the left says before they take off into the night.

Olivia drops the axe and breathes a sigh of relief.

“Where are Talon and Phantom?” She asks.

“Right here.” Talon answers as Phantom shimmers into his corporeal body.

It’s clear one of the werewolves took a swipe at Phantom, seeing three large slices in his arm. Olivia runs to him and tries to stop the bleeding.

“Are you alright?” Talon asks, rubbing the blood from her dirtied face.

She nods.

From the position of the moon, I can tell we don’t have much longer with our little ghoul.

“How about we play one more game before the night ends?” Talon asks.

“What game is that?”

“Our favorite. Hide and seek.” Phantom answers, injury forgotten. It looks superficial anyway.

“What about the werewolves?” Olivia asks, worrying her bottom lip.

“We don’t have to worry about them anymore. At least not tonight.” I say, knowing they’ll eventually be back. “But if you’re worried, I can bring the axe.”

She nods her head.

“Now, go hide from us. And when we catch you, we’ll fuck your brains out.” Talon says, fangs gleaming in the moonlight.

She takes off running into the dark, and we start counting, ready to catch her one last time.

Chapter 15

Talon

Breathing in the cool night air, I roll my shoulders. Ready to seek out my prey like the primal hunter I am.

The attack from the werewolves threw me. Normally, they stick to the outskirts, picking off any stragglers. I don’t know what emboldened them to get so close this time. The thought unsettles me. They’ve always been a nuisance, but if they’re stepping up their game, I’ll need to be more prepared. At least, I think that’s the last we’ll see of the tonight. They don’t take loss well.

Cracking my knuckles, I wait as the time ticks by, giving Olivia ample time to hide from us. Though, I can sense she’s not far.

Tonight, has been nothing but surprises for me, and that’s saying something. Not much can surprise a thousand year old vampire, but tonight is an exception. I’d never anticipated binding myself to a human, but Olivia is not just any human. She has a spark about her. A lightness that’s yearning to be set free.
