Chapter 26

“I felt the earth move.”

-Ryker

A creative string of curse words echoes from the second bathroom at the guest house. It sounds like Cat is having a problem getting into the shower.

I knock on the bedroom door.

There’s no answer. The stream of cursing continues.

The bedroom door is unlocked. I push it open and call out: “Kitten? Are you okay in there?”

More cursing.

I stalk closer to the closed bathroom door.

“Brainless dick-less fiddle farts!”

I knock. “Kitten?”

The cursing stops. “Go away you… you…dingus!”

I stifle a laugh. “Haven’t heard that one since the 90s. Vintage.”

She goes quiet.

I try the doorknob and find the door is unlocked. “Kitten, I’m coming in to check on you, so if you don’t want me in there, now is the time to say something.”

I wait for a few beats. When she doesn’t protest, I enter the bathroom to find her sitting on the floor, her arms twisted in her shirt, which is half over her head.

“Want some help?”

Only one of her eyes is visible, but that one is shooting lasers at me.

“I can’t read eye lasers, so you’ll have to use your vocabulary instead,” I point at her shirt. “Say the word, and I’ll help you.”

“What word?”

“Please.”

Her one eye rolls so hard, I swear I can feel the earth moving. But that might be the effect of seeing her in this vulnerable position.

Cat is the epitome of a hot mess, with her blood-stained shirt twisted up around her neck and head. Her pants are ripped. She’s covered in dirt, and her chest is heaving from the exertion of trying to get undressed with a bum arm.

And she still has the power to get my pulse racing.

“Please,” her voice is quiet. “I need your help.”

I smile. “Was that so hard?”

“You have no idea.”

“Oh, I think I do,” I lift her off the floor and turn her face to the mirror. “You didn’t like this shirt, did you?”
