“We were at war,” I shake my head. “So. Yeah.”

“Anything interesting?”

“What’s with the twenty zillion questions, Ryker?”

“Nothing, just getting to know my partner.”

“This is weird, even for you,Akecheta.”

“Fine. What do you want to talk about?”

“The case.”

“The case will be there in the morning.”

“I like to think about the clues right before bed,” I chew on my burger. “That way, my brain is working on it while I sleep.”

“Is that what’s causing the nightmares? Some case?”

I pause and set down the burger. “Who says I have nightmares.”

“I have eyes. And ears.”

Shit. I didn’t think I was screaming during that last one, but maybe I am wrong about that.

“Everyone has nightmares.”

“Seemed more serious.”

I shrug. “Maybe they are. Maybe they aren’t.”

“What are they about?”

“Don’t remember,” I lie.

He folds his arms across his chest, causing his impressive shoulder muscles to swell. “Don’t lie to me, Kitten.”

I run my tongue across my teeth. “You lied first.”

Surprise flickers across his face, and he does a pretty good job of locking it down. If it weren’t for my training, I might not have noticed. I wasn’t sure he had been lying before. But now I am.

“What do you think I lied about?”

Ah. Tricky. Two can play this game.

“I know.”

He leans across the table until his face is right next to mine. “Know what?”

I try not to breathe in his irresistible scent. I suck in a breath through my mouth and can almost taste him. Fucking shit.

“I. Know.”

He studies me for a minute, then leans back with a big stupid smirk on his big stupid face. “You don’t know shit, Kitten.”

“My intuition tells me you’re lying.”

“Femaleintuition?”
