It’s the last thing I remembered before I lost consciousness.
I jerk awake in the hospital conference room, staring at Flint Mendota, who has an amused expression on his damn face.
“Must have been one helluva dream, Navarro,” he smirks.
I narrow my eyes at him.
What did he hear?
“Couldn’t hear what you were saying, but I got the impression it was something horrific,” Flint sobers.
I nod. I don’t want to talk about it. And certainly not with this guy.
I scrub my face with both hands. “What’s the word?”
“Both are in isolation,” Flint explains. “Probably for a few more days. They have a bead on the radiological element.”
“Dirty bomb?”
“No,” Flint snorts. “Nutty Professor.”
“Troutwine.”
I knew something was off when Cam Saber and Aaron Pearce visited Virgil Troutwine on Wednesday. His shack in the woods was chock-full of experiments and random shit that should have set off a red flag.
Flint assigned me to babysit his sister-in-law.
I failed.
Spectacularly.
I’ve been so focused on finding her twin. I almost missed her collapsing in a senior citizen’s yard.
“Dude, you need a break,” Flint punches my shoulder. “You’ve been here since she arrived, and no offense - but you’re starting to smell.”
I stare at him in silence, which makes him laugh.
Flint nudges me toward the door. “The nurse at the front desk, not Nurse Ratched, the other one, has the hots for you. I’m sure she’ll give you a change of scrubs and show you to the doctor’s showers. But seriously, go.”
I nod and stand, stretching my legs. I have no idea how long I nodded off, but it was long enough to make every muscle stiff.
A hot shower would do wonders.
Chapter 5
“I don’t need no stinking matches.”
-Cat
“It’s a wonder she didn’t die,” I muse, pushing the cold macaroni and cheese around my plate.
Celia slaps my hand. “Don’t say that.”
I glance up at her. “Why? It’s true. She waltzed into a nutcase’s cabin, in the fucking woods, and got herself sick.”
“It’s not her fault Virgil Troutwine had Zendantium in his lab.”
“You’re right. It’s herbodyguard’sfault he didn’t notice something was off,” I glare.
