That guilt eats at me every day.

Things could have been so different.

“Dad?” Daisy nudges me out of my daydream.

I smile. “Yes, Daisy?”

She points to the counter. “Your phone is ringing.”

I glance over and sigh. With my girls in the house, the only reason my phone rings is work-related.

A Fire Chief is always on call.

I snatch up the phone -Unknown Number.

I swipe to answer. “Chief Pearce.”

“Aaron?” A voice from the past cries on the other side of the line.

“Yes.”

“It’s Nadine Salazar,” the woman sniffs. “Jacks’ wife.”

The bottom drops out of my stomach, and my head starts pounding.

Not again.
