Dash frowns at me. “You couldn’t do it. You couldn’t stay mad at me. That’s why you came crawling back.”
I decide to move past this ridiculous and delusional conversation. “So after we saw each other at the college party, you ran into Zack? Where was this?”
“It was right after you moved to Washington,” Dash says. “I was there for a conference at the Washington Convention Center and ran into Zack at a restaurant. I believe he was waiting for you that night.”
My heart clenches as more details flood my system. I was running late that night, and Zach said he’d wait for me. By the time I got there, an hour later than I was supposed to, he was gone. I thought he got sick of waiting and left. Then, he never called. With my track record, I assumed he ghosted, not died.
“It’s a shame about his heart attack,” Dash recalls.
“How did you know where to find him?”
He shrugs. “I stumbled across him. I was meeting a friend.”
“Hmmm. So, you attend a convention hundreds of miles away from where you live. A place you’ve visited only a few times in your life, would you say that’s accurate?”
He nods.
“And while you’re at this convention, you decide to go to a bar in Georgetown, 15 minutes - by car - away from the convention center. To meet a friend. And you just happen to run into an old classmate, who just happens to be waiting for me, your ex-girlfriend, and he just happens to have a heart attack?”
He lifts a shoulder.
“Where you there when he had the attack?”
“I don’t know why you’re acting so weird about this,” he frowns.
“I think it’s a major coincidence, don’t you?”
“It’s not a coincidence. It’s Fate. Fate moves in mysterious ways.”
And the cold chills just keep on coming. “Fate?”
“Yes, Lina,” Dash leans forward. He tries and fails to reach my hands. His handcuffs rattle as I pull out of his reach. “It’s Fate. We’re destined to be together. No jackass men and no temporary women will stand in our way.”
“You believe it’s fate that we met?”
“Not fate that we met. THE Fates decided we’re to be together,” Dash slows down his explanation like he’s talking to a two-year-old. “You and me. The Moirai decided we should be together.”
I shove away from the table so fast. My chair falls back to the floor. A second later, the door swings open. Luke is standing in the doorway, ready to punch someone in the face.
“You okay, Carolina?” Luke doesn’t take his eyes of Dash.
I nod. “Yes. And I know who has Rand. We don’t need this dickhead anymore.”
I walk out of the room to Dash screaming about destiny and the Fates. It’s not until I get outside, I let out the scream that has been building in my lungs all day.
Chapter 47
“Where’s Miracle Max when you need him?”
-Rand
I slowly regain consciousness and shake my head to clear the grogginess. A glance around tells me I’m in some sort of warehouse. I’m chained to a chair near a dirty wall. I try to straighten, but my movement is limited. My arms are numb. Shaking them helps, but not much.
I have no idea how long I’ve been out of it, but Carolina must be worried by now. If I don’t show up for dinner, she’ll know something is wrong.
Shit.
No. She’ll probably think I ghosted her.
