“Yes,” she pinched the bridge of her nose. “But why do they have to test that love so much?”

“Babe, that’s what kids do,” I rubbed my thumb over her knuckles. “But, I think it’s high time you stopped thinking of them as boys and realized they’re grown men. They need to face the consequences of their actions without you riding in to save the day.”

“You seem to know an awful lot about this,” she blinked up at me.

More than I ever wanted to tell her, because if she knew, she wouldn’t look at me the same ever again.

Celia stared at her empty glass of wine, looked at the bottle, then up at me. “Let’s get out of here. I’m suddenly hungry for something else. Can you get the food to go while I visit the ladies’ room?”

I blinked as she stood up.

“Domenico!” I yelled to the kitchen. “Box up the food! We have an emergency!”

Celia threw a smile over her shoulder as she sashayed to the restroom, and I thought my heart would beat right out of my chest.
