“That was ridiculous,” Chelsea says. We fist bump, chalk flying out into the air on contact. Then Dani holds both her hands out as well.

“That was sick, Rey.”

“Good job,” Emma says, patting me awkwardly on the shoulder, while Jaime and Sierra smile tightly. The act is getting harder to fake now that it comes down to the results from two events. One slipup and our dreams are dead.

And, of course, we’re headed for balance beam.

chapter thirteen

Ipop off the beam, finishing my warm-up so Emma can get in a few skills before it’s time to compete.

“Patience up there, Audrey,” Janet says as I pass her on my way off the mats. “Let the skills flow. Don’t force it.”

Nodding, I accept her correction and then grab my water bottle. I have some cushion now, thanks to that bars routine, but I need to hit beam.

Jim picks up his commentary after we finish warm-ups. “Here’s where we’ll see Emma Sadowsky and Dani Olivero pull away from everyone else and maybe see Jaime Pederson make a move into the top four.”
