What if it’s not coming up empty? The guys said this house is protected, but how protected? Samara surely has a witch on her team who can conjure up a locator spell. They’ve probably ransacked my apartment to get whatever they need.

Is that why she was here earlier? Because she was testing them?

“Come on in. The water’s fine,” Knox calls from my bathroom.

He ran up to me after I stormed out of Emmett’s room. Jax is infuriating. Like deep down infuriating… like beneath the skin, muscles and bone. At like a molecular level kind of infuriating.

When I walk into the bathroom, Knox is in the shower with his hand outstretched.

“What are you doing?” I ask with a smile on my face.

“I’m going to take a shower with you and help wash the come that’s dripping down your leg,” he chuckles.

“You don’t have to.”

“I know I don’t, but I want to. I enjoy the water, I enjoy you, and I enjoy your breasts.”

“Thank goodness you enjoy me, more than my breasts.”

“They’re tied. I can’t very well say you and breasts at the same time.” He tries, coming up with a variety of combinations that sound like brou or yousts.

After a few tries, I pat the air, laughing, and step into the shower with him.

“Is the water too hot? It’s hard for me to tell sometimes.”

“Water is perfect.”

He extends his arms, wrapping them around my back and bringing me in, making sure the water stays out of my face. He plants a kiss on my forehead, then runs his hands down my cheeks and tilts my head up to look at him. “How do you feel?”

“I feel fine. Great.”

“Not sore?”

The water beads and runs down his face and is almost mesmerizing to watch. The way it dances on his skin and how his skin nearly glows under it is magical.

“What?” he asks with a reserved smile on his face.

“Nothing.”

“Something. You were just staring at me.”

“You’re just beautiful. Radiant. That’s all.”

“Well, shucks, you’re going to make me blush.”

“I doubt that.” I push against his hard chest playfully.

“You are all those and more, Everlee. From the moment you walked up on stage, I knew there was something different about you.”

“Different? Did you know I was a true fae who was going to blow up your life?”

“Not in so many words.” He laughs and grabs my shoulders. “Turn around and let’s get you cleaned up so we can try to get a little sleep before the sun rises.”

He takes great care in washing my hair and rinsing it, before washing my body with a soap that smells like pumpkin and cinnamon and maybe vanilla? It’s seasonally appropriate whatever it is, but still smells fresh and not over the top.

When we get out of the shower, I slip on another pair of underwear and steal Knox’s t-shirt. Just as I’m about to climb into bed, I hear a gigantic crash. “What was that?” I jump and run into the hall.

“Nothing,” Knox says, reaching for my hand, but I pull out of his grasp. “You need to get back in the room.”
