Jax and Knox both scrunch their foreheads, staring at me.

“But she got away.”

Samara laughs condescendingly. “She got away. She’s a nobody. How did she defeat a dragon, a selkie, a werewolf, and a vampire?”

Rage surges through me, so I clamp my hands on the edge of the desk.

“Care to take a seat,” Knox offers.

She looks coolly over her shoulder at him, then continues walking around the library. “Speaking of… where’s Emmett?”

“He’s out,” Jax says.

“Out?”

CRASH.

Echoes of screams and bars crashing together sound through the house. Faint, but there.

My eyes go wide as they fall on Jax and Knox, who also heard it. Fortunately, Samara doesn’t seem to hear.

Where’s Everlee?Jax commands through mindlink.

I sent her downstairs via the library wall.

Fuck! That’s where Emmett is.

What the fuck is he doing down there?

What do you think? We couldn’t very well setup his blood bank in the middle of the fucking kitchen with your precious Everlee here!Jax barks.

“Hello?” Samara asks. “Emmett’s out?”

“Yes. He’s getting supplies for dinner.”

Hopefully not Everlee,Knox chimes.

Shut the fuck up, Knox. You aren’t helping,Jax snipes.

Sorry just trying to bring light to the situation.

You won’t be trying to bring light to it when you have to pry her lifeless body from Emmett’s grip, or deal with the fall-out and guilt he’s going to have afterward,Jax says.

“Would you like to stay?” Jax asks. “For dinner?”

Samara’s finger glides over the spines of the books on the bookshelf and her finger pauses on the Cask of Amontillado. Is she playing with us?

“Not tonight, but I will take a rain check,” she says and continues walking.

I let out the breath I was holding. It’s a proven fact that if you hold your breath in a moment of suspense and angst, it actually slows the event down, allowing your mind to process.

Not. It just makes your lungs hurt, because they’re crying out for oxygen.

“So you don’t have her? You aren’t hiding her here.”

“Emmett. You need to stop.”Everlee’s voice filters through the air.

At least she’s fighting,Knox encourages.
