His grip tightens, but my gut tells me it's because Jordan hurt me instead of blood.
“I smelled it then.”
“You did? And you smelled cat piss?”
“No. It was the most heavenly scent I’ve ever smelled.”
“Emmett,” Callum warns, and a prickle goes down my spine.
I can’t see his face, but the entire room tenses.
“Emmett!” Jax snaps, stepping forward aggressively. “Let her go now or I’ll make you.”
Callum and Knox both look at Jax. Apparently, he’d had enough of the soft approach and decided to use dominance.
In a second, Emmett releases me, pushing me towards Jax, who grabs me in his arms. A gust of wind tousles my hair as Emmett runs away.
“Thank you,” I say, looking up doey-eyed at Jax. He’s a beautiful man with a hard expression.
“I didn’t do it for you,” he snaps and pushes me away to run after Emmett.
Stunned, I look between Knox and Callum.
“We need to get you out of here before anyone else finds you,” Callum says.
“I need to grab my phone.”
“Leave it. They’ll track you.”
“But…”
“Do you have your speed yet?” Callum asks.
“No, I don’t think so.”
He turns around and lowers to his knee. “Climb on.”
“Your back?”
“No. My head. Yes, my back.”
Standing there, looking at Callum’s back, the angel and devil appear on my shoulder.
Everlee… don’t do it. Don’t go with these men you know nothing about. Just because they’re hot as sin- The devil chimes in with a thank you - doesn’t mean you should go with them. They have no allegiance to you. You’re nothing more than a pawn in their game.
Conversely, they did just save you, so they clearly want something from you, so they’ll keep protecting you until they have what they want. It just buys you more time.
Time. That seems to be what I need most right now. Time for Lizzy to work her magic and for me to find mine.
“Don’t kill me,” I say, climbing on his back.
“A little late for that now, don’t you think?” In a flash, he’s standing and running through the door, and my arms and legs tighten around him. Knox is right beside us, smiling at me. They are moving so fast the world around us looks like a blur. I’m taken back to my childhood when my father would give me rides around the neighborhood, but we never moved this fast. No, this speed could almost take your breath away. And to think the vampires move faster than this.
I hope I don’t regret this decision, even though I’m fairly certain he was trying to be nice and make me think it was mine to make. I’m fairly certain if I said no, I’d still be going with them. Just unconsciously.
EVERLEE - JOGGER FROGGERS
It’sdarkbythetime we get to their house. We’ve been walking for the last thirty minutes, mostly in circles through the city, to confuse anyone who may try to follow us.
