“Really?” one guy behind him scoffs.

Jordan unleashes, spinning and grabbing the guy by the throat and shoving him against the front door. “Yes, really. She’s probably not even a true fae, anyway. If she was, she’d be using her powers on us and not running like a pathetic coward and hiding behind a bunch of misfits.” He glances over his shoulder as he says the last words.

Emmett’s grip lessens on me, like he’s expecting someone to lunge and react. By the looks of it, my money would be on Jax. He’s seems the most on edge and seems to really hate this guy. Knox seems happy and jovial and along for the fight because he’s loyal. Blue eyes seems to have a cool and level head and is the possible leader of this group, and Emmett. He’s still hard to read. Clearly a man torn. It’s obvious from the way his fingers grip into my arm then seconds later he’s rubbing it affectionately, or the way his eyes look like he wants to devour me while at the same time he seems like he’s fighting against himself to do just that.

Waiting another beat to see if he’s pushed the guys enough, he speeds out of the door and seconds later, his guys follow.

I’m now standing in the empty restaurant with at least a vampire and a werewolf and two others. Emmett still has his arm wrapped around me, his cool fingers gently digging into my skin. I can almost feel the battle that’s raging on within him. The two opposing forces, one wanting to whisk me away and likely kill me and the other who doesn’t want that.

“Well, that went better than expected,” Knox says, bouncing up and down, clapping his hands. “Although I would have liked to put Jordan in his place. I really hate that guy.” He stops talking when his eyes fall on me, still in Emmett’s arms. “Callum?”

“Emmett? You can let her go now.”

He doesn’t speak, and his grasp doesn’t loosen. If anything, it tightens. I try not to react because I don’t want to spark him into whisking me away, because I have a feeling if he did, they wouldn’t be able to stop him, or at the very least catch up to him before he drains me of my blood.

“Emmett,” Callum warns with a soft, but stern, voice.

Emmett snaps his head to look at Callum and they stare at each other in silence.

“Let her go now. She’s safe,” Callum says, calmly.

“Callum,” Emmett sighs painfully.

“You did good. You protected her. Now let us.”

Emmett’s grip on me tightens, and he steps backward. Instinctively, I grab on his forearm and hold.

Knox steps forward, but Callum shoots his hand out to stop him.

“Emmett, let me have her.”

“Her blood Cal. I’ve never smelled anything so sweet before. It’s like a drug calling out to me. I hear it. I feel it.” His grip tightens with a bruising strength.

“It’s a trick. It tastes like shit,” I add.

Emmett chuckles. “You’re lying to me because you don’t want me to rip your throat apart.”

“Well, that took a dark twist.”

Callum and Jax both stare at me with confused looks on their faces and Knox is just staring at me in shock. I have nothing to lose. The only thing I can use is my mouth, and that thing has gotten me into more trouble than I can count, but perhaps just once it can get me out of trouble. If he is battling with himself, then he needs to be reminded of his humanity and not of the monster he thinks he is.

“Look. You seem like a good guy. Nice. You helped me. Saved my life.” I rub his arm affectionately. “Thank you. Without your help, those monsters would have killed me. But you didn’t. You saved me.”

“I don’t want to kill you.”

“I know. That’s what makes you better than Jordan and his group.”

“You don’t know me.”

“I don’t. But I’d like to. You seem like a really nice guy who wants to make the right decision. The thing holding you back is that my blood smells good to you. But I’m telling you. If you like the taste of cat piss, then you’ll love it.”

“Cat piss?” He scoffs, his hand relaxing a little more.

“Yes. Wretched.”

“How do you know?”

Drive home the fact he’s better than Jordan.“That monster, Jordan, smacked me hard across the face and caused me to bleed.”
