He laughs. “No. What do you think she could do?” He glances at the door, then back at me.

“What? You can smell it, can’t you? Emmett’s been cooking all afternoon.”

“Yum.”

Yum?

He must have had an eventful day, because he is definitely not acting like himself. “Everyone will be glad you’re home. I swear it’s been torture. I was about to track you down when you showed up.”

He chuckles, but doesn’t speak as he follows me up the stairs. I hold the door open, but he stands at the top, looking back at the car like he’s forgotten something.

“What are you doing? Come on in, we’re starving. We can get whatever it is after dinner.”

“Right,” he smiles and takes a step hesitantly into the house.

“Oh, thank Goddess you’re home. Knox has been losing his damn mind with worry.”

“Knox. So funny. I’m fine. Just got busy discussing business with Sammie.”

Emmett looks at me, then at Jax. “Sammie?”

“Sorry. Samara. I guess I just got used to hearing the name so much today.”

Emmett nods one time.

“I’ll go get Callum.”

“And-”

I cut my eyes at Emmett. “Yes. I’ll tell him to hurry. You don’t need to tell me twice.”

Something about Jax isn’t sitting right with me. He seems different, which could be explained, but he’s not been a dick to me, so that definitely seems odd. And Sammie. He never calls her Sammie.

Emmett looks at me, studying me for a minute, then nods. “Should I start plating?”

“No. You know how Callum is about his studies. It’s always just one more chapter until he’s at the end of the book. I will try to get him to hurry, though.”

Emmett nods. We can’t mindlink because he’s not a shifter, and if Jax really is Samara, then I don’t know if she picks up the super hearing Jax has. I don’t think she would pick up his abilities. Fuck! Why did I invite him in? That would have been the test.

When I push the library door open, Everlee starts to say something, but I rush across the room and clamp my hand on her mouth. She looks at me, pissed and confused, but I shake my head.

Callum stands up, tensing.“What’s wrong?”he mindlinks both of us.

“I think we have a problem. Everlee, when I remove my hand, don’t speak.”

She nods, but is still confused.

“Callum, it’s time for you to put the books down and come eat dinner.I think something has happened to Jax.”

Everlee whirls around, eyes wide and opens her mouth to speak, but I clamp my hand around it. If she could shoot lasers out of her eyes, I’d have a hole straight through my head right now.

“I think Samara is here, pretending to be Jax. Callum, say you need to finish one more chapter.”

“I just need to finish this chapter. How the fuck did Samara get into the house?”

“No. Emmett has worked for hours and I’m starving.I may have inadvertently invited him, her, in. He, she, was looking at the car and I said, come on in, it’s time to eat. Blah blah blah. I didn’t know at the time. We can just uninvite him and that will push her, him, out. Goddess, this is confusing.”

“You’re sure it’s not Jax?”Everlee asks, picking at her nails.
