Thecardroppedmeoff at the front of Lizzy’s condo. We decided on her place since it was closer to Bo La Vie.
“Thanks.” I tipped the driver, but she was no Betty. I sort of regretted not calling her because I felt a connection with her.
I climbed out, pulled my dress down, and then walked up the short flight of stairs.
Before I could knock, Lizzy threw the door open. “Hey, girl, hey!”
I smiled, stepping inside from the cool weather.
“I’m so excited! I’ve been looking over their menu all day.”
“Me too!” My face pulled. “I didn’t realize how much it cost.” I quickly added, “I don’t have a problem with the cost, but I have a problem that Emmett probably spent a small fortune on those sandwiches we ate. I feel like I should pay him back.”
“Yes,youprobably should.” She laughed.
“Ishould?”
“Shit. You were volunteering.”
“Lizzy.” I scolded.
She sighed. “Fine. You talk to him and I will contribute.” She handed me a martini when we walked into her kitchen. “A little pre-game action.”
“What are you getting?”
“Girl. I have no idea. I stared at that damn menu all day and everything looked fantastic. I think I’m just going to take whatever the server suggests or the special… I don’t know. I saw a sampler, but that’s only like three.”
“What is a girl to do?”
“Indeed!”
We finished up our drinks and debated on calling a car or walking. We didn’t mind the walk, and it was only a few blocks away, but the temperatures were dropping. In the end, we decided to walk, in part because of time, but I really think it was because Lizzy wanted to walk by Vixen.
Ten minutes later, we were walking down the sidewalk, core shaking, with our hands bundled near our faces. When we looked at the weather, we didn’t consider the wind chill factor. The wind was whipping, and we were freezing, but we were too far down the road to turn back or admit defeat. Nope. We were both stubborn as shit and would suffer so we could talk about how we defeated the great frost that never was.
We had the idea to stop in Vixen for just a second to get warm, but the front doors were closed. “Should have looked at the hours.” I mumbled through chattering teeth.
“Note to self, Thursday through Sunday only.”
I looked down the road and saw the sign for Bo La Vie sticking off the side of a building in white and black font with round bulbs around the sign. Very classic.
“So close, yet so far away.” My eyes were watering through the wind.
As we were coming to the road that led to the back of Vixen, a car pulled to a stop in front of us. After a second, the window rolled down.
“Everlee?”
“Jax.”
“Jax?” Lizzy asked.
“Get in the car. Both of you.” He jumped out of the driver's side and opened the back door, not waiting for an answer. We slid in and relished the warmth of the car. He climbed back in and turned around with a scowl on his face. “What are you both doing? I thought you had reservations at Bo tonight.”
“We did… we do.” I quickly corrected, nervous under his gaze. It wasn’t as intense as Callum’s, but it was close. “We were walking there.”
“In this weather? Are you mad?”
“Apparently.” I said, cutting my eyes to Lizzy.
