He grins. “Never. So. Are you?”
Well aware that I’m on camera, I don’t answer him directly. “Why don’t you show me this gentle horse first?”
CHAPTERTHIRTEEN
Liam
Haley’s in her element.
She’s so comfortable on camera, and she knows how to talk to her audience like they’re right here on the ranch with her.
I hang up with Lulu just as Haley’s starting, and I make sure to follow her on her feed. I don’t know much about social media, but I know that the more people watching, the better.
I walk closer and closer as she talks and gestures toward the horses and the Wild guys inside the fenced pasture. I lean against the fence next to Macey. Logan’s busy handing feed trays to Ty and Jesse, and Haley is walking over to Blake and Reid. I see red when Reid’s arm goes around Haley’s shoulders like she belongs to him.
“Back off, dude,” I mutter, not realizing until too late I said it out loud.
“Don’t worry,” Macey says. “Reid’s not her type.”
“Have you met Haley before?” I say, surprised.
“No, I’ve known her as long as I’ve known you. But I can read people. And Haley’s not interested in Reid.”
As if on cue, Haley shrugs off Reid’s arm and steps forward.
The tension in my jaw eases.
“She’s definitely only interested in one man here.”
There goes my jaw clenching again.
What man?
“You.”
I flick my gaze over to Macey. She smiles.
“It’s obvious. I honest-to-God thought y’all were a couple.”
“We’re not.”
“I heard. But you could be. If you wanted to.”
Maybe so. But I don’t think I can go there with any woman again.
“Bad break up?” she asks me.
“Something like that. I’ve got a daughter.”
“I get it. Just don’t give up on Haley and you yet. I have an eye for these things.”
Before I can respond, movement from the field gets my attention.
Not too far from the fence line where Macey and I are standing, Haley is petting a horse, who’s standing calmly, and the cowboys are all occupied a fair distance away with the rest of the horses.
Except for one, a large black horse who comes out of nowhere and starts charging toward Haley and the horse she’s with.
I don’t take time to think.
