“Why are the players filing off the ice?” I ask.

I arrived at the hockey arena early, and I’m sitting in Declan’s box with Haley, Emerson, Jamie Beth, and Mia, who’s seated next to Declan and Luke Wild.

Haley shrugs. “No idea. Maybe they’re going to clean the ice one more time before the game starts?”

Emerson shakes her head. “They never do that this close to game time.”

When Jared skates out onto the ice without his helmet, I turn to Emerson. “Why is he out there all alone?”

She furrows her brow. “Did he tell you about some pre-game ceremony the team has planned? Max never mentioned anything.”

“He didn’t.” I crane my neck to get a better look. “The official is handing him a microphone.”

“Good evening.” Jared’s deep voice comes through the mic clearly. “Welcome to the home of the Wild Kings.”

The crowd goes wild, no pun intended.

“Before the game begins, I’d like to take a moment here.” He pauses and looks at our box.

The Jumbotron shifts the camera to our suite.

Actually, the camera zeroes in on me.

I wave to Jared, my cheeks hot from the attention.

“I fell in love with a girl from my hometown.”

“Oh God.” I put my hands to my cheeks, which are now flaming.
