“Never,” I promise.
“I just want to make sure you get your proper rest leading up to your opener.”
“Of course.” I hide my grin.
As soon as we enter the room, Ashley drops my hand and kneels down by her suitcase on the floor. “I’m going to take a quick shower before crashing.”
“I’ll do the same.”
Her hand that’s lifting the lid of the suitcase freezes.
“After you,” I say hurriedly. “You go first. Of course.”
She nods quickly. “Okay. Right. I’ll be fast.”
“No rush. I’m going to grab my bags out of my truck.”
* * *
Ashley and I aren’t kids anymore. We’re both adults, and we know better than to make a big deal out of a small thing like sharing a bed.
Plus, we have a third body in the bed.
That’s right—Louie joined us shortly after we both showered, and she’s currently loudly purring at our feet. She’s definitely an icebreaker, that one.
Ashley spends the next five minutes sitting up so she can pet Louie and whisper silly talk to her.
“You’re the sweetest kitty in the world, aren’t you?”
I laugh. “She’s already got you wrapped around her finger.”
“Like she doesn’t have you.” I can hear the smile in her voice.
“I’m not spoiling her,” I say immediately.
“Sure you’re not. She’s already sleeping in your bed. Win told me Hunter would make their kitty sleep separately so he could get a good night of rest during the season. She overrules him a lot, of course.”
I chuckle. “Of course. And I’m not as hardcore as Hunt. I don’t mind a little nighttime interruption.”
That came out way more suggestive than I’d planned.
Ashley’s hand on Louie stills, and she ducks her head so I can’t see her expression.
“Anyway, I’m not worried,” I add quickly.
“Good. Because our kitty is very content right here.”
Ourkitty.
Why can’t we stop with the damn possessives?
“Well, good night,” Ashley tells me as she flops onto her back and leans over to turn off her bedside lamp.
“Good night, Ash.”
I stay on my back as she shifts onto her side so she’s facing away from me.
I wait for her breathing to even out.
