I strip down and pull on my scrubs, glancing at my phone before dropping it into my pocket. There’s a text from Liv.
Thank you, chat later??
I can’t help but smile as I make my way out toward the pre-op area. I look down at my watch and realize I have time for a coffee before things get started, so I head to the café to get an Americano before I start my day.
I walk up to the counter and look at the menu. Although I already know what I’m getting, it’s the same every day.
“Morning, Doctor,” the cashier, Melanie, croons. She’s a shameless flirt; rumor has it she has slept with half the OR staff. “The usual?” She goes to twirl her hair subconsciously as she says this, and my lip turns up in a smirk.
“Yes, thank you.”
She turns around slowly and begins to get my coffee. I was checking my phone for emails when I heard a voice behind me.
“Hey Liv, want to meet up later to study? We can go to my place or maybe the library?” Melanie hands me my coffee. “Have a good day, Dr. Johnson.” My face must display the shock I feel because she then says, “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, fine. Thanks.”
Drink in hand, I slowly turn around, and there she is. My Liv. She was standing right behind me. My eyes roam her face, which shows a suppressed laugh, and her eyes are alight with humor.
She looks at me and, in a playful tone, says, “Well, good morning, Dr. Johnson.”
My cock twitches in my pants as I try to play it cool. I see the guy she is with shift uncomfortably at her side. I look at him and extend my hand.
“Dax Johnson, I don’t think we’ve met.” He went to shake my hand and then I add, “I’m Liv’s boyfriend.”
I quickly look over to Liv to gauge her reaction, and I see her lips part for a second as if taken by surprise, and she quickly introduces her fellow student.
“Dax, this is Adam. He’s in my class.”
“Hey, man, nice to meet you,” Adam replies uncomfortably.
I shake his hand and squeeze slightly more than necessary. My possessive side is coming through. Liv and I are still looking at each other as I hear him say, “I’ll catch you later, Liv,” and he hurriedly steps away from us to order his coffee.
Her entire presence draws me in like a magnet. I step closer purely out of instinct. “Hey baby, I didn’t know you would be at this hospital today.” Really stressing the word t-h-i-s. I gently caress her cheek, and she leans into my hand.
“Well, you didn’t ask. We didn’t exactly talk much last night,” she whispers.
The most adorable pink blush rushes up her neck into her cheeks, and it takes all my self-control not to pull her into my arms and lock my mouth with hers. But she was right; our night was filled with more moaning than talking as well as other animalistic sounds. We reconnected through multiple orgasms, not conversation. And we barely had time to talk this morning. But that needs to change. I want to know everything about her. Not just about school, but her goals, and her future. I feel the need to know her completely, and it can’t happen soon enough.
“What time do you get out of here today?”
She looks at her watch. “I’m not sure, but I better get going. I don’t want to be late to meet my instructor on my first day here.”
“Okay, I’ll call you later then.”
I lean in to give her a quick kiss on the cheek and make my way out the door. I turn back to see that guy waiting for her with a fucking coffee in his hand and extending one to her. He sees me and smiles like the cat that got the canary as he hands it to her. I’ve got too much going on today to worry about him, and I feel slightly better now that he knows I’m her boyfriend. Boyfriend. I’m Liv’s boyfriend. She didn’t deny it or get spooked out when I said it. Happy jitters roll through me as I go up the stairs to the second floor that leads to the operating room.
I don’t know what possessed me to claim Liv as my girlfriend, but suddenly, I just did, and it felt as natural as breathing. She may not believe me now, but I intend to prove to her that she is, in fact, mine and only mine. I have a smile on my face as I hit the button to go into the OR. The door slides open, and as I turn the corner toward the back room, I see Tatiana. She waves at me and heads over in my direction.
“Hey, Dax. How are you?” she practically purrs the words at me as her hand runs down my arm. “I was hoping you could be my date this weekend. I have this work party I need to go to, and I need a plus one.”
Stepping back to distance us, I look at her and hesitate. She picks up on my demeanor quickly and squints at me in suspicion.
“What’s going on, Dax? You usually love this kind of thing. Especially the after-party at my house.” She winks and tries to step closer to me again. I am about to reply, but her pager goes off, dismissing me as she walks quickly down the corridor. “We’ll talk later, Dax.” I hear her say as the swish of her white coat turns the corner.
Well, this gives me some time to chat with her about Liv later, and at least I have time to decide how I will let her know I have a girlfriend now. I laugh, thinking I didn’t give her a choice.Damn straight,I think to myself.Lost her once; I will not lose her again. With that, I look at the scheduling board and see that my patient is ready for me in the OR. I push thoughts of Tatiana and Liv aside, make my way in and get to work.
The rest of the day goes by without incident. The cases went as smoothly as I had hoped, and the patients all did well. I make my way up to the inpatient floor to do rounds on a few post-op patients and hopefully discharge them home. I stop by the nurses’ station to see which rooms my patients are in and pass by a few nurses charting on their computers. A familiar smile catches my eye as I see a nurse that I hooked up with before. Annoyance flows through me as I try to figure out how to avoid her. She looks up at me, and I awkwardly wave and continue about my business heading to the charts. I am not a total dick, but I don’t want to encourage her. She’s a stage five clinger, and I don’t want to risk screwing up anything with Liv. As I reach for the chart, I feel her hand come up to stroke my forearm.
