She bursts out laughing. “Gross.”

“It is. Trust me.”

For the rest of our time on the boat, she has a smile on her face. It settles me that she’s enjoying herself.

We catch a few fish and decide to eat them for dinner so they don’t spoil.

“Thank you,” she says later that night. The sun is gone, and the stars are shining bright in the clear sky.

“For what?” I ask, poking at the logs on the fire. They pop and crackle, sending sparks flying.

“You always know what to do to make me feel better.”

I look over at her, the light from the fire illuminating her gorgeous face. She’s curled up on the chair, a blanket draped over her legs, dressed in one of her hoodies. I think I’m going to have to get her to start wearing mine so hers stop going missing.

I mean, I return them when I’m done, so it’s not like they’re gone forever.

Sadly, my heat won’t be happening anytime soon, so I can’t steal the one she’s wearing.

Although, if it happens to be forgotten here, no harm, right?

“I like making you happy,” I say, looking back down at the fire.

“I like making you happy, too,” she whispers.

My heart picks up its pace, hand tightening on the fire poker.

“Emmett.”

“Mhm?” I hum.

“This might be a selfish thing to ask of you, and you can say no if you want to...” Her tone is nervous with a hint of hesitation.

“What’s that?” I’m still not looking at her, afraid that if I do, I might pull her into my lap and do something that will change everything between us.

“Can you promise me something?”

“Anything,” I say without hesitation.

She laughs. “You don’t even know what I was going to ask you.”

“Doesn’t matter.” I flick my gaze over to her.

She chews on her lower lip, and I want to pull it free and take it between my teeth as my cock twitches in my sweat pants. Hopefully, the smell of the fire can mask my scent.

“Promise me you’re never going to leave me. That we will always be in each other's lives no matter where life takes us.” She says the words as a low whisper, like she doesn’t believe she has the right to ask them.

Sitting up in my seat, I turn my body to hers and place my hand on her knee, causing her to suck in a breath. “I’m not going anywhere, Lexi. You are the most important person in my life. And always will be. You will come first, no matter what.”

“What if you have Alphas?”

“You come first,” my voice comes out low and husky.

“What if they don’t like how close we are?” She licks her lips, her pupils dilating. She’s killing me right now.

“Then they’re not the ones for me.”

“What if they’re your scent matches?”
