“Good,” I say, looking at the dark horizon and then back to Kilo. “You’re on babysitting duty.”

I need to go home. Chrys needs to be bonded. It doesn’t matter which one of us she bonds to. It just has to happen tonight.

CHAPTER

FIFTEEN

CHRYS

The drone dropsoff my order and I pull the container out, digging through the normal recurring items that were already on the list until I pull out what I added.

I set the turkey baster aside. I have no doubt it’s going to do its job… except this time around, I’m the turkey.

The chemistry kit is meant for kids, and I do feel a little bit bad about how I intend to repurpose it when I look at the bubbly faces on the box. I empty it and put it in the recycler immediately. I do not need cartoon characters judging me.

A heavy purr echoes through the room, and I look up as Kissu pushes Shock toward me. Any time he stops Kissu headbutts him, shoving him forward again.

“Apparently, you need me.”

“Idohave a question,” But I don’t know how Kissu would have known that.

Shock looks from me to the turkey baster. I take a deep breath. “Will it work?”

His brows pinch and his eyes get that faraway look. “Yes.”

“Good.” I look past him to where the other two are arguing. “You have to help me convince him.”

Because I don’t need to be clairvoyant or read minds to know that Risk will go along with it, even if he doesn’t believe Shock.

Arc…

I don’t know what happened while he was outside, but he came back in a mood and the two of them have been arguing ever since.

Shock’s hand slips around my neck, pulling me to him and kissing me so sweetly. “It works. He’ll go along with it… I promise.”

I let out a shaky breath. “Thank the saints,” I whisper, smiling at him. When he releases me, I take my supplies to the dish slot.

Fingers crossed, I drop them in and a minute later, they pop out into the little space where things go when the system doesn’t know where to put them yet.

“Give me a second and I’ll come over to help convince him.”

Shock nods and lets me hurry past him with my arms full of supplies.

I grab a couple towels and set one on the bed before I spread the other one out on the nightstand and arrange my supplies in place.

Beaker, spoon, baster… I think that’s all I need.

I take a long, deep breath. Even if Shock said it’ll work… a sliver of doubt has slipped through the cracks of my mind and I wonder if this might be the time we find out it’s not a certainty.

But Ineedto be sure, or at least fake it while Arc can hear my thoughts.

It’s going to work. I look at myself in the window’s reflection. It has to work.

When I step out into the living room again, Arc turns to me and demands, “You need to bond to one of us tonight.”

I blink at him because… it’s a strange way to interpret my thoughts, but, “Okay.”

He takes a deep breath and closes his eyes. “You need to have that safety net. I don’t want to make you pick, but you have to.”
