"You always blame me."

We end up taking so long that the sun has already gone down. It’s basically evening. He drags himself closer to me so he can read what I’ve written. Literally pressed up against me.

I don’t move, because I don’t want to make it awkward. I just stay exactly where I am, pretending he has zero effect on me.

Except for my heartbeat, which is absolutely betraying me.

What can I do? Apparently I’m the anxious type.

When he finally stands up to leave, helmet in hand, I follow him to the door without speaking.

"You’ve changed, you know," he says, looking back at me.

I raise an eyebrow. "How?"

"You let me stay."

He doesn’t wait for a reply. Just opens the door and steps out. "Don’t sleep with the window open," he says over his shoulder.

"Why?"

"Uninvited things might sneak in."

And he’s gone.

I am halfway through an espresso and some reading I’m not really doing when my phone lights up.

It’s my friend, back from Canada.

Noah.

Thank God for that idiot. Half German, half Italian. Which means I can actually talk to him in Italian without my brain exploding. A blessing, honestly.

I haven’t talked to him in weeks. "Hey."

"Dude," Noah’s voice comes through. "what’s up? You still alive or did the Italian sun fry your brain?"

I smile despite myself. "Still alive."

"That doesn’t sound convincing. You okay?"

"Yeah, I’m good. Just… stuff. Busy."

A pause. "Sophia?"

I lean back against the headboard. "We broke up."

Noah whistles. "DAMN. For real??"

"For real."

"Holy sh—what happened?"

I hesitate. Now I have to mentally re-live my humiliation. "She was sexting behind my back," I say. "With Gio."
