“I can’t get ahold of Max. His phone is off. HR was gone by the time I thought to ask them for his address. Even his mother doesn’t know where he is. Please don’t quit. I tried all day.”

I was feeling a lot more charitable toward Vane and his antics with Max in my arms, so I chuckled and lay back down with the phone pressed to my ear, but then everything he’d said caught up to me and I sighed. “Please tell me you didn’t call his parents and tell them there was an issue.”

“Why?”

“That’s the last thing he needed, that’s why. I have him here.”

Vane hummed. “I thought about what you said.”

“Did you?” I snarked. “Sir, that’s amazing.”

“He hasn’t been completely terrible around the office lately.”

I smirked. “Is that guilt I hear, Vane Elwood?”

“He started it!”

“He was a scared kid with a very bad idea.”

“Are you making excuses for him?”

Purposefully, I let the silence stretch out. “No, but I am suggesting that perhaps he has paid his penance.”

“Bring him in with you tomorrow. He’s unfired. Well, never was fired, since I never put through any paperwork.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Do I run this office at all?” he asked, sounding more like himself.

“Of course, sir,” I said smoothly.

He snorted and hung up. I slipped my phone into my pocket.

Max rolled over. Heat socked me in the gut as he snuggled up naked to my front and nestled close until his head was firmly tucked underneath my chin. My heart thudded too hard as I snaked my hands down to squeeze his peach of an ass. He moaned deep in his throat and tried to get away from the pain, but that meant he squirmed against my very interested hard-on.

“Did I ruin everything?” he whispered.

“No, not at all. You couldn’t if you tried.”

He huffed out a noise that said he didn’t agree.

There was a light tapping on the door, and I rested my hand on the back of his head, holding him against my chest as I sat up a little. “Yes?”

“Hey, guys.” Vic’s voice carried in. “There’s food out here.”

“Thank you,” I answered for both of us. “We’ll be out.”

Max didn’t move, and I ran a hand up his naked back.

“You came to find me,” he mumbled.

“I shouldn’t have done all that.”

“You didn’t want to?” Max shifted in my arms.

“That’s not the issue. I mean, it’s still not smart, given everything, but I didn’t have your permission. To come here. To do what I did.”

He sat up out of my grasp and I missed him immediately. “So you did want to spank me?”
