“Yeah, so I’m a King, not a devil,” I grumbled at him, and this time he really did laugh.
“No, you’re a prince. Maybe a charming imp prince.”
My throat felt tight and weird and some of that happiness from earlier was back, swirling into the confusing mix of things happening inside me. I still didn’t feel okay, was sure I was wrecking everything, but his touch didn’t hurt, and he wasn’t mad at me, even though I’d caused him problems.
“You hit Rourke, didn’t you?”
“Oh yeah, he jabbed me first. He’s got a nasty right hook.”
Glancing down, I sighed. “That’s not good.”
“Don’t worry. It’s a bit of a lark.” Jamie slid closer, and I wanted to moan but held it in. His body heat was amazing, and he was still half naked. “We had it out. Water under the bridge.”
“Do you think he’ll be mad at Forrest?” I shivered and glanced back, dread clenching my throat, but someone had closed the door and I couldn’t tell what was going on inside.
“No more’n I’d hurt ya.”
“I don’t know you.”
Jamie slid a hand along my arm and gripped one of my fists until I unclenched my fingers. He held my hand like it was the easiest thing in the world. It was weird to have him bring my knuckles up and kiss them, and I wondered if he was doing it to… make fun of me somehow. My stomach fluttered and heated, and my dick was happier with this than it had been with all of Angel plastered against me.
“I have business tomorrow mornin’. But I’d like to see ya after.”
Staring at our joined hands, I held my breath until it got uncomfortable and then let it out. “Okay.”
“Ya don’t sound certain.”
“People don’t like me. People aren’t nice to me. I’m not Forrest. I’m—” My hand convulsed in his, but he didn’t let go. “If you’re waiting for me to be like him, it won’t happen. I’m not good at this. I’m not good at anything, except riding a bike. Maybe.”
“You’re right. I did ask Forrest to come with me earlier, or so I thought, but it was ya I came to search out, not him.” Jamie smirked, and my stomach fluttered with heat. “There’s something here, don’t ya think?” He leaned in and placed a quick kiss on my cheek.
“You’re… you’re treating me weird.”
“How so?”
I shrugged.
He stepped in until our toes bumped and dipped his head to brush his lips over mine. My chest quivered and my body trembled as I held myself rigid. I didn’t know what I should be doing, but I didn’t want to make him stop.
He leaned back and we breathed the same air for a few seconds. “I wouldn’ta done that earlier, if you’d’ve let me know. I make a hard living, and I want what I want, but I’m not a bastard.”
“And tonight you wanted me?”
“Seems so.”
“And tomorrow too?”
“Yes.” He smiled.
Take it now. That’s all you’ll get. Do it now. He’ll be gone after this, and it’s so good.A barrage of painful thoughts beat down on me, and I had a hard time looking into Jamie’s eyes. “I’ll come back with you now. I won’t stop this time.”
He groaned and sent a look at the closed door behind us. “Best wait. Ya go back to your brother tonight. I won’t forget to come after ya tomorrow. Wild horses couldn’t keep me away. Promise.” He leaned in and cupped my chin, raising me up so he was in charge of the kiss he laid on me. He used his tongue to part my lips, and I gasped at the rush of heat that streaked to my cock and had me painfully aware of how much I liked this.
He stood tall and smiled at me. “Sweet dreams, Hunter. Tomorrow?”
I nodded, couldn’t speak. He let me go and walked backward away from me, and I shook my head and smiled for real when he bumped into the wall. He bounced off it like he meant to do that and turned around so he was walking the right way to leave. I stood there and watched him until he turned the corner at the end of the hall.
When he was out of sight, I went back into Forrest and Rourke’s room, opening the door carefully and slipping inside so I could stay out of the way if I needed to, but I couldn’t keep the smile from my face. Angel patted my shoulder as he went out the door and then closed it behind himself.
