Jaeyoung’s brow knitted. “Yes, I understand that, but whatisit? What are its properties? How can I study the phenomenon?”

I scratched my head. To hear him address it in such factual terms felt odd. But he was a human from Earth. It was natural he didn’t understand.

“It is not something to explain,” I said. “It is something tofeel.”

Jaeyoung sighed in frustration, shaking his head. “Never mind.”

My ears flattened. Had I displeased him?

“I’m sorry I couldn’t be more helpful,” I said. “I’ve never found my filum, so I have no personal experience with it.”

Jaeyoung paused, then glanced at me. “Really?”

“Yes.”

He pulled out the notebook from his pocket and rapidly scribbled in it.

“Are you writing about me?” I asked, curious and excited.

When I leaned over to view the paper, Jaeyoung’s face flushed. He shoved the notebook back into his pocket.

“I’m just recording information.” He eyed me for longer than usual. “So, you’ve never had a filum, and yet you innately understand the concept. Is that right?”

“Yes.”

Jaeyoung drummed his fingers on his crossed arms. “So, it’s natural for Maeleons. But Levi uses the phrase, too. He must understand it—at least more than I do.”

“Is that why you wished to speak with him?” I asked.

“Yes, although as usual, he was less than helpful,” Jaeyoung mumbled.

“CouldIhelp you?”

He stared at me with sharp eyes. A ripple of longing pulsed through my feelers. They wanted to float towards him, but I resisted so I wouldn’t disturb his thought process.

“It’s possible.” Another beat passed before he asked, “Do you remember the night of the feast?”

How could I ever forget? The sight of him thoroughly dazed and aroused was forever branded on my memories.

“Of course. You refused my help.” My statement wasn’t accusatory, just factual.

“Yes. I dislike losing control. But...” His gaze fell to the floor before flicking up at me. There was a glimmer in his dark eyes. “I’ll say it outright. I have a theory, and I want to test it—but I need your help.”

I couldn’t contain the eager gasp that escaped me. My feelers floated like a swarm of insectoids taking flight.

“Absolutely. Whatever you need, I’ll assist you.”

“This isn’t fun and games, Linn’ar. This is serious scientific research.” Jaeyoung hesitated. “It just involves...”

“What does it involve?” I asked when he trailed off.

He cleared his throat. “Intercourse.”

Why did he sound so shy? And why did the color of his cheeks suddenly turn that darker shade?

“I will do my best to provide quality intercourse to you,” I stated.

He huffed and turned so I didn’t see his flushing cheeks. “Anyway, don’t feel forced to accept. If you’re not truly interested, I could always ask someone else.”
