I had no reaction when Galileo said it. But when Zakariel said the same thing to me, although sarcastic, it had affected me strangely.

Why was this arrogant alpha wolf getting under my skin?

Zakariel

I was toodeep into my thoughts to notice the crappy weather. Rain and wind crashed into me, as did the salty waves at my feet, threatening to pull me into the water. If I didn't have my powers, standing here would've been dangerous as hell.

Though the elements still weren't as dangerous as that omega orca.

I brought my hand up to my throat, touching it gingerly. It didn't hurt--he hadn't really choked me, just grabbed me, but it tingled all the same. His hand was so warm andbig.I was used to omegas being on the smaller side.

My list of past failed dates rolled through my mind. At least, the ones I actually remembered. There were so many of them that my brain had to forget some to make space for other shit. I'd attempted to date omega wolves, AKA the obvious choice, and when that didn't work out, I went for prey shifters. I wasn't picky, though. I'd seek outanyomega just to see if I felt that fated mate spark.

They were all nothing to me. Unexciting. Boring. No thrill at all. That's what I was looking for, right? A special jolt of feeling?

I clicked my tongue and kicked a pebble into the water. My parents and uncles made it sound so simple. Just find your fated mate, Zak! It's as easy as looking into his eyes andfeelingsomething! My least favorite was 'you'll know when it happens'. What the fuck did that even mean?

I noticed my hand was still touching my neck where Kamari had grabbed me. I slowly let it fall away.

"Zakariel."

The deep, rich voice shook me out of my tangled thoughts. Kamari was approaching me. He looked bigger, somehow, underneath the chaotic grey sky.

"Hey," I said.

Neither of us spoke for a moment. Kamari stared out into the roiling waves. I didn't think he was much older than me, but the stress lines around his dark eyes made him seem aged.

"Are you all right?" Kamari asked, not looking at me.

"Well, I'm soaking wet and cold, if that's what you mean."

"I meant your throat."

I couldn't help myself. "Sore on the outside, not on the inside."

Kamari glared at me like I was the most annoying person on the planet, but I didn't care. I'd gotten his attention and that pleased me.

"I'll assume you're fine since you're making idiotic comments," Kamari said.

"Yeah, I am. Thanks for asking."

Kamari ground his teeth like he wanted to say something but couldn't get the words out. "I... apologize for attacking you."

"Oh, the choking thing?" I shrugged. "It's fine. My cousins have put me through worse."

Kamari raised an eyebrow. Maybe he was imagining what kind of fucked-up family I had.

"It's not as bad as you're thinking," I said, smirking. "Probably."

Kamari ran a hand through his hair. It was white, but with the rain soaking it through, it looked more grey. It contrasted with his smooth light brown skin. I licked my lips without realizing I was doing it.

"Seriously, it's fine," I said when the silence had gone on for too long. "You were just protecting your own, right?"

Kamari looked at me. There was a flicker in his eyes I couldn't read. "Yes."

I shrugged, trying to show him it was cool. "Don't worry about it. What, are those omegas all lost or something? I guess you wouldn't want a stranger in there."
