Padding up to the shoreline, Nero scooped up a handful of water. "The salt’s gone."

"What?"

"When I was here with Remington, this was saltwater." Nero put a hand to his chest. "Since I am a shark shifter, I'm most comfortable in saltwater. But since you're a koi, you thrive in fresh water, right?"

I nodded, still not understanding where he was going with this.

"Come on, Nishiki." Nero grinned. "Did you forget exactlywhatDad is?"

Weston tilted his head, examining the water. "You said he was a water spirit, correct? Then what you're suggesting is that your father knew you were coming and changed the composition of the water to better suit your shifter form?"

My jaw fell open. "Wait, he can do that?"

"Apparently," Nero said. "I mean, he did say that he reigned over all the local water in the area. I guess he's more powerful than we thought."

Suddenly, a deep voice I'd never heard before spoke seemingly from nowhere: "I am."
