“Er, I’m actually waiting for my friend.” He smiled. “Wanna keep me company until he shows up?”
Ah.
I’d finally figured it out. This omega was simply stupid.
If it was anyone else, I would’ve been long gone by this point. But something about his blatant naïveté rooted me to the spot. I couldn’t in good conscience leave him alone with that man passed out on the floor. If he woke up…
“Fine,” I growled.
“Thanks!” He huffed, seeming worn out. “Sorry, I’m just gonna sit down.”
He sat with his knees to his chest on the other side of the room. I wanted to go to him, but I didn’t. The amount of distance between us was good. Safe. It would help stave off my primal desire. The mouth-watering scent of his heat made my pelt prickle with want, but since I wasn’t a fucking asshole, I kept it in my sheath.
“Whoa,” Sage said in awe. “Your claws are massive.”
I hadn’t noticed they were still out and digging into the floorboards. There were huge gouges in the wood.
“Yes,” I said stiffly. I didn’t bother retracting them.
Sage blew out a hot breath. “Sorry, I’m not usually like this. All sweaty and hot and crampy…”
“Sage, you know what’s happening to you. You must.”
He frowned. “Great. First Remmy and now you.” He threw up his hands. “I don’t know why I’m sick or whatever, okay? This has never happened to me before!”
My eyes trailed to the place where his ass met the floor. I tried very, very, veryhard not to notice the slight trickle of fluid soaking into the wood. I bit down on my teeth.
The idea that he didn’t know was utterly ridiculous. But when I looked into his eyes, his expression was genuine. There was no doubt in my mind that he was telling the truth—hereallydidn’t know.
“Sage,” I said seriously. “You’re going through a heat cycle.”
He stared at me like I’d told him the moon was about to crash down on us. There was a beat of silence before he shouted, “WHAT?”
