“I said, did he hurt you?”

“No. Not at all.”

Remington growled with sympathy. “Well, he must’ve scared you. Hell, even I was freaked out.”

I shook my head with a smile. “Nah, I wasn’t afraid at all. Don’t worry.”

“Um… Okay.” He watched me awkwardly, then sighed. “This has been a messed-up night. Let’s just go home.”

“Uh huh.”

We meandered home, Remington hurrying and me taking more of my sweet time. I wasn’t in a rush. I kept glancing back at the oak tree as if Xander would still be standing there, but I never saw him. That made me a little sad. A worm wriggled in my chest. The idea of never seeing Xander again sucked ass.

As we neared home, I made up my mind. I’d find Xander and figure out exactly what this magical feeling stirring inside me was all about.
