Horror and anger flashed across Red’s face. “Of course I wouldn’t do anything to them. What kind of monster do you think I am?”
“I don’t think anything. I’m just telling you what the others are worried about.”
That calmed him down a little. He exhaled a deep sigh. “I won’t harm them. I swear on every hair on my gorgeous pelt.”
I nodded. “Then I’ll speak to the others.”
As I turned to leave for the grove, Red piped up. “Wait. Why bother? Like, no offense, because I appreciate this, but why do you even give a shit about me?”
I faced him directly, seeing the wavering emotion behind his sharp eyes.
“Because I was like you once,” I said calmly.
Red tilted his head. “What d’you mean?”
“Don’t worry about it.” I smiled. “You just wait here. I’ll see what I can do.”
As Red sat, awaiting his fate, I set out back to the grove where Dax was waiting for me. I didn’t know if I could fulfil Red’s request, but the least I could do was try. Besides the fact that we were fated mates, my life changed for the better because Dax took a chance on introducing me to his pack. How different things would’ve been if he’d left me behind…
I shook my head. I didn’t want to tread down those painful thoughts. If the pack could heal my old wounds, maybe they could do the same for Red.
Ifthey let him join.
