“Keep going,” Dax urged. “You’re so close.”
“What is it? I can’t tell yet,” Sage said.
I bellowed in pain as another agonizing contraction gripped me.
Damnit, I didn’t think it would be this hard! How were Rock’s omegas popping babies out all the time?
With the burst of angry determination I felt from thinking about Rock, I pushed harder than ever. A wet shape slid out of me and I gasped. I didn’t feel the pressure any longer.
The rest of the pack had gone quiet. For a moment silence hung in the air until a tiny bleat broke it.
“A fawn,” Dax murmured. His voice was thick with emotion and tears glimmered in his eyes. “Morgan, we have a baby fawn.”
My heart skipped a beat. I craned my neck around to see the tiny lump laying in the grass. Pure white flecks dotted its dark back. My instincts kicked in and I nuzzled my baby, checking it over.
“He’s a boy,” I announced.
“Aw! A little buck, just like his daddy!” Len said excitedly.
Dax hadn’t spoken yet so I gazed at him. His eyes were wide with wonder as he stared at our baby. He almost seemed shy.
“Can I…?” he murmured.
“Of course. He’s your baby, too.”
As Dax reached for our newborn, he shifted before our eyes to become a little human with clenched fists. He was crying softly but as Dax pressed him to his chest, he calmed down with a tiny sigh. I didn’t miss the tears falling down Dax’s cheeks. My heart was full of love for both of them.
“He’s finally here,” Dax murmured, gently stroking our baby’s back. “Our little Ashe.”
Len gasped and clasped his hands together. “Is that his name?”
“Yes,” I said.
Hugo and Sage shuffled closer, both visibly excited but trying to remain calm for Ashe’s sake. Dax smiled wider than I’d ever seen him smile and waved his brothers over. All three cooed over Ashe, asleep in his dad’s arms.
“You did it, Morgan,” Dax said gently. “You’re finally a daddy.”
“I am,” I said, chuckling. “You know what else I am?”
“What’s that?
“Extremely tired. If you’ve got Ashe, I’m going to take a short nap.”
Dax grinned. “Go ahead. You deserve it.”
Full of trust that Dax and the pack would watch over my baby, I drifted off to a quick rest.
