“Yes, you do,” I insisted. “You look like you’re going to keel over. Were you sick before you left for work?”

When Skylar didn’t reply, I shot him a glance. The corners of his lips were tight, like he was holding words back.

“Skylar,” I pressed. “Answer me, please.”

“Yeah. But I felt fine right before I left.”

“Was Kaden home?”

He winced. “Yeah.”

“And he didn’t stop you from going to work?” I asked, feeling annoyed at his roommate for not intervening.

Skylar shut his eyes, screwing them up. “He tried.”

My annoyance lessened slightly. I knew how stubborn Skylar could be. “Why didn’t you listen to him, then?”

“I don’t want to talk about Kaden right now, okay?” Skylar snapped.

The intensity of it took me off guard, especially since all his other words had been pained and muffled.

“Did you guys have a fight?” I asked.

Skylar didn’t reply, staring tensely out the window. I took that as ayesand didn’t pry any further. Maybe I’d ask again when he didn’t feel so physically awful.

We arrived at the nearest walk-in and I helped Skylar out of the car. His skin still felt cool and clammy, and he leaned his weight into me. My heart raced, and to be honest, I was scared out of my mind. I’d never been so worried to see a friend sick before, not in this soul-clenching way, like I’d forgotten everything else except seeing Skylar better.

Are we even still ‘just’ friends? Or are we something more?

After filling out some paperwork and waiting for what felt like forever, Skylar got called in. I sat there in my seat, my fingers digging into my knees. But Skylar paused, turning to me with a shaky frown.

“Aren’t you coming with me?” he asked.

My heart nearly shattered. I leapt out of the chair and followed Skylar. Before I realized what I was doing, I took his hand in mine. He didn’t object. He just squeezed me a little harder.

“All right,” Dr. Lane said. She was an alpha woman, about middle aged, and smiled kindly at us. “What seems to be the problem?”

Skylar swallowed hard. “I threw up a few hours before work, and then felt okay. But I threw up again a few hours later, and they sent me home.”

Dr. Lane nodded, glancing down at the clipboard. “I noticed you’re an omega, but here you didn’t tick a box for pregnancy.”

Skylar bit his lip. “Um…”

“I can leave, if you want,” I offered quietly, putting my hand on his knee.

But Skylar grabbed it. “No. Stay.” He lifted his head to face the doctor. “I had unprotected sex recently, but I’m not sure if I’m…”

She nodded in understanding. “You don’t know for certain, then.”

“Right.”

“So it’s a possibility it could be morning sickness,” Dr. Lane said. She scribbled away on the paperwork. “Shall we find out?”

Skylar’s head shot up. “But I thought it was too early to tell.”

I felt the pulse in his hand skyrocket.

“A blood test can tell earlier than a drug store pregnancy test,” Dr. Lane explained. “Is that something you’d like to do?”
