Even in the dim light, I saw the blush spread across his cheeks. “Raf, I meant…” He sighed. “Nevermind.”
“What?”
“If you want to sleep on the floor, that’s fine. I just thought you’d be more comfortable in bed.”
“But then where would you--” I stopped mid-sentence when my pea brain finally understood what Skylar meant. “Oh.”
He glanced away, his cheeks more pink. “Yeah.” He shrugged. “But if you want the floor…”
As Skylar sat on the bed, I leaned up so that my arms were crossed over the edge.
“Sky, you’re something,” I said with a laugh.
He frowned but it looked like more of a cute pout. “Why am I something?”
“Because how the hell am I supposed to know you meantsleep in the bed with youunless you specifically said it?” I asked. More gently, I added, “And especially after that bad run-in you just had. I wouldn’t want to impose on you like that, you know?”
Skylar’s brow furrowed. “Maybe I want you to sleep in bed with mebecauseof that,” he mumbled.
His words were bittersweet, like an arrow to my chest.
“Are you scared?” I asked softly.
Skylar nodded.
“All right, then.”
I hauled myself off the floor and onto the bed next to Skylar, keeping a healthy distance between us--which wasn’t that easy, considering we were two grown men sharing a double bed. But Skylar’s frame was lithe and he could easily keep curled up on one side of the bed, and I tried my best to keep my legs from splaying everywhere.
“Is this good?” I asked.
His reply was quiet. “Yeah.”
I shut my eyes, but I wasn’t tired. My heart hammered, and my skin felt electric with excitement. Despite it being an innocent act, my stupid body reacted as if this was something to get riled up over.
I swear to god if I get a boner over this, I’m gonna cut my own dick off.
Skylar’s voice came a moment later. “I’m sorry if this is awkward.”
“Nah,” I said easily. “It’s kinda fun, actually.”
We weren’t facing each other, but I heard the little smile in his voice when he replied. “That’s good.”
Another beat of silence passed, both of us wondering if the other was truly trying to sleep, or if there were still words that wanted to be spoken.
My mind wandered. I thought about the real reason I’d come to find Skylar tonight. But was it a good time to bring that up right now?
“Can I ask you a question?” I said.
Skylar sounded sleepy. “Uh-huh.”
“So, uh. I wanted to talk to you about something important. That’s why I came to your workplace when I knew your shift was over.”
I felt Skylar’s weight shift on the bed, and I noticed he was looking at me over his shoulder. “It’s a good thing you did. I don’t know what I would’ve done without you.”
I blushed, feeling glad he couldn’t see my face.
“No worries. Anyways,” I went on. “I wanted to talk about your, er, problem? I guess?”
