I snorted. There was the firecracker omega I knew. “If you say so.”
We entered the apartment, dim with the sunset, but Skylar didn’t turn the lights on except for a single lamp in the living room. The place smelled faintly of Skylar and cats.
Speaking of which, two had bounded up the front door. One orange and one black.
“Halloween came early, huh?” I remarked.
Skylar was in the kitchen, and it sounded like he was rummaging through the cupboards. “Ha ha.”
I kneeled down and stretched out a hand, waiting for them to come to me. The orange one hung back, slowly lashing its tail, but the black one strutted forward and pushed its head into my hand.
“Aw, this one likes me,” I said, smiling.
“That’s Demon,” Skylar told me. “She’s technically mine. The other one is Trouble, her brother. Kaden’s his owner.”
“Demon?” I repeated. “That’s an interesting name.”
Skylar grinned. “Her mom’s name was Lilith. We wanted to keep the theme going.”
Demon kept rubbing on me like I was her favorite person in the world. Trouble, the orange brother, glared at me.
“He’s not gonna attack me, is he?” I asked.
Skylar laughed, and the sound was pleasant to my ears. “No. He’s just a bit shy with new people. We don’t have them over a lot.”
“So Kaden doesn’t have any booty calls?” I teased.
“If he does, they don’t happen here,” Skylar said, shrugging.
Judging by his tone I guessed it was ano.I wanted to ask Skylar if he had the same problem, but I figured by the way he kept his tryst with Axel so secret that he wasn’t that type of guy.
“Wait, so does that mean I’m the first alpha to come over since Griffin?” I asked.
Skylar was in the kitchen getting out two glasses and filling them with ice. “Yup.”
Interesting,I mused silently.
Skylar strolled over with the drinks, clear and bubbly. He’d tossed in a couple strawberries for flavor.
“Thanks,” I said. I raised the glass to take a sip, expecting Sprite or something, but then I got the familiar sharpness of alcohol on my tongue. “Did you spike this?”
“No!” Skylar said. “What kind of person do you think I am? It’s gin and tonic, asshole.” He leaned over to take it back, looking embarrassed. “If you don’t like it, I’ll get you water or something.”
I chuckled and leaned out of his reach before taking a more confident sip. “Nah, it’s fine. I just didn’t know we were drinking.”
He rubbed the back of his neck. “Well, when I was over at your place, you were a good host and offered me tea, but we were all out. Kaden’s a tea fiend.”
I smiled at him, deeply endeared. “Gin and tonic is fine. Thanks.”
A sudden thought hit me as I raised the glass to my lips, and I put the drink down before grabbing Skylar’s hand. It rested on his lap. His own drink stood untouched on the coffee table in front of him.
“Wait,” I said. “You’re not drinking, are you? I thought you said you had tried to get pregnant.”
A somber expression came over Skylar’s face. His shoulders slumped a little. He looked intensely tired.
“You’re right,” he murmured, then let out a humorless laugh. “I’m so stupid. I completely forgot.” He covered half his face with his hand. “God, I’m an idiot. I can’t drink if I’m supposed to be pregnant, right?”
“You’re not stupid or an idiot,” I told him. “It’s natural to forget.”
