Chapter 7
Ramsay groaned and kicked his legs off the couch. He swivelled around so that he was leaning back against the back of the couch, his legs spread and his hand awkwardly placed in front of his crotch.
So he does know he had an erection,I thought in amusement.
But I was a little less amused that someone had barged in on us. That sent panic through me and I scrambled upright. Once again I felt like Ramsay and I were teenagers caught in the middle of canoodling instead of two grown men fooling around in the comfort of their own home. Well, er, Ramsay’s home, at least.
I was surprised to see Dan, Ramsay’s father, and a woman I didn’t recognize, but who looked familiar enough to guess was his mother. She had the same auburn hair and green eyes. It wasn’t hard to see which parent he got his good looks from.
“Y’all ever heard of knocking?” Ramsay called as his parents approached.
“Did knock,” Dan grumbled. “But I think the two of you were too busy to hear it.”
This time, Ramsay blushed as hard as I did.
“Well, you must be Matheson,” the woman said. “Good to meet you. I’m Linda, Rammy’s mum.”
“Rammy?” I murmured to him.
“Shut up.”
Linda continued with a slight frown. “I heard about what happened at the Moon Meeting. To be honest, I thought it was a big joke when Danny told me about it. But you must’ve been scared, Matheson, with that gryphon telling you about that big prophecy and all.”
I shrugged. “Yeah, it was weird, but I’m used to it now, I guess.”
Linda smiled and pressed a hand to her chest. “Yes. But look on the bright side! It means you might be fated mates with our little Rammy!”
“Fated mates?” I repeated.
Ramsay and I exchanged glances. The idea of it obviously hadn’t occurred to either of us. Fated mates was a term used for the special bond between an alpha and omega, and since an omega hadn’t existed around the lake for ages now, the term was practically unheard of except for legends and stories that old timers told.
Could Ramsay be my fated mate?
“Don’t get too excited, hon,” Dan interjected. “That gryphon didn’t saywhichalpha Matheson was supposed to fall in love with. There’s two others that could be the ones in the prophecy, or whatever.”
Linda nodded in understanding. “Yes, I know.” She winked at us playfully. “But one out of three isn’t such a bad chance.”
I laughed politely. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Ramsay smiling.
“We just came to see how you were doing, Matheson,” Dan told me. “Make sure our son’s treating you right, and all.”
“He’s treating me just fine,” I promised. “He’s a good host.”
“Smells like it.” He sniffed the air. “Is that deer roast?”
“Yup.” Ramsay crossed his legs. “Are the two of you stayin’ for dinner?”
“Ah, no, we don’t want to intrude,” Linda said. “But your dad and I did want to chat about the prophecy with you, boys.”
Ramsay nodded seriously. “I’ll get drinks, then.”
We sat around the dinner table while Ramsay handed out a light glass of wine to everyone. He took the seat next to me when he was finished.
“So, the gryphon got me thinking about the words,” Dan began. “The line about fertile lands. How did it go again?”
I wracked my brain for the words. “When the fertile lands grow barren, seek the chosen one to awaken,” I repeated.
Dan nodded. “That must mean you, Matheson.”
