“No.” He kissed my forehead. “But I’m proud of you for working up the nerve to tell me, anyways.”
When he pulled away, I leaned in to kiss him again. It deepened, becoming more passionate until we were on the floor.
“Has it been long enough to find out?” Theo asked curiously.
I paused, biting my lip. “A week is a bit soon, but sometimes the test can tell. If not, another week should do the trick.”
Theo smiled, tucked a strand of hair behind my ear and asked, “What do you think we should do?”
“I… I want to know,” I finally said. “Even if it’s early, I want to check.”
Theo nodded and got to his feet, helping me up. “And if it’s negative?” he asked slowly. “Do you still want to keep trying, or should we stop? I’m okay with whatever you choose.”
“No,” I said firmly, holding his hand tighter. “I want to keep trying. Iwantto have a baby with you, Theo. No matter what.”
Theo grinned and kissed me. “Then, let’s see if we have an early surprise.”
* * *
My hands trembledas I took the test out of the box. The logical part of my brain told me it was still early--the test could’ve easily come back negative, even if I was pregnant. The technology was good, but not entirely reliable yet. Even the recommended waiting time for a blood pregnancy test was two weeks. But impatience flared inside me like a lit flame, and I had nothing better to do than try.
“Here goes nothing,” I mumbled.
After I was done using the test and needed to wait for the result, I let Theo come inside the bathroom with me. He seemed anxious, but excited, pacing across the room and fiddling with his hands.
“Y’know you’re gonna have to drink blood like Benji and Caleb did, right?” he blurted out.
“Yes,” I said patiently. “I was their doctor throughout both their pregnancies, remember?”
Theo paused for a second, then kept walking back and forth. He seemed more nervous than I was. “Oh. Right.”
The tiny screen on the pregnancy test changed, and I flew to pick it up, my heart racing with anxiety and anticipation.
It should be negative, I told myself. It’s too early to know for sure, it has to be negative. You just have to wait another week, or try again, or--
But I didn’t have to do any of those things. I stared, wide eyed, down at the test that told me the result was positive.
Theo saw the shocked expression on my face and shouted, “What?”
My whole world seemed to change in an instant. No longer was it just me, chugging alone in my normal--if a little boring--life. I wasn’t alone. I had Theo, and now I had a baby, too.Ourbaby.
I blinked as a wide, genuine smile spread across my lips. “Theo… It’s positive. I’m pregnant.”
Theo flew at me, taking me into his arms tightly and kissing my neck. “Hah! I knew it! We’re gonna be dads, Max!”
