I winced as Pierce cut through my thoughtslike a knife.

He’s right. I could’ve been a normal human and lived a normal life, until Margaret…

“Could you give us a moment?” Pierce asked us. “I’d like to talk with our brother privately.”

It wasn’t like Adriel was listening to anything we had to say anyway, so I shrugged. If anyone could get through to him, it was probably Pierce. “Go ahead.”

“I think I’m going to go, er, wash up,” Maxwell murmured. He shot me a glance. “Theo, would you mind coming with me? I need your help reaching certain places.”

I cocked a brow, but said, “Okay.”

Pierce’s gaze lingered on us as we left, but he didn’t try to stop us. As we closed the door behind him, I heard their muffled voices begin to speak again. I hoped Pierce could get through to Adriel, because otherwise I didn’t know what else to do except--

“Come on,” Maxwell said urgently. He grabbed my wrist and practically dragged me down the hall.

“What? I thought you wanted to go to the bathroom.”

“No. We’re getting out of here,” he muttered. “I have an idea. Something that might change his mind.”

“Then why are we skulking around? Why don’t you just tell him?” I asked.

Maxwell shot me a grim look. “Because he’d never agree to it.” His eyes glittered mischievously. “It’s easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.”

I found myself grinning for the first time since Adriel had barged in on us. “There’s the Max I love. So what’s this idea of yours?”

“You’ll see.”
