Luckily, he hadn’t run off yet. I found him lagging behind in the hall, a few feet away with his back against the wall.

“Theo!” I called.

His head snapped up. “Maxwell,” he said softly.

I caught up to him, but all my annoyance with him faded away when I saw his guilty expression.

“Sorry,” Theo said. “Um, can we talk?”

I nodded. “That’s what I wanted to do, too.”

“Great.”

He took me by the arm, and with the cool touch of his skin, the rest of my irritation melted away.

And I couldn’t ignore the quickly increasing pace of my heart, either.
