“Er,” I began awkwardly, “I need you to lie and say the girls are sick, and that they need Maxwell on-call. That he needs to move in again. You know, the way he was before.”
This time they didn’t seem so enthusiastic. They exchanged glances, then looked over at the girls, who were obviously anything but sick.
“Are you sure that’s going to work?” Benji asked. “I mean, I don’t mind doing this if it’ll clear your name, but I don’t want to worry Pierce.”
“And I don’t want to freak Adriel out, either,” Caleb added.
My heart sank. This was my best lead at getting Maxwell to move back into the mansion, and it was about to unravel because of my ill-thought out idea.
It’s a stupid plan,I thought, mentally scolding myself.Of course they don’t want to lie to their mates!
Benji suddenly turned to Caleb. “Hey, remember when you had chicken pox as a kid?”
Caleb blinked. “Yeah. Why?”
“What if we told them that’s what the girls have? I mean, it’s normal for kids.”
“Hm… I think they’re a bit young for it, but maybe it’ll work.” He turned to me. “But that means Maxwell will have to be on board with the lie, won’t it?”
That was the other part I was worried about. I nodded. “I’ll talk to him before he leaves in the morning.”
Cautious hope built inside me. If Maxwell was on board with this crazy idea, then I’d be killing two birds with one stone. I’d clear my name to Adriel and prove that I wasn’t an unstable and impulsive young vampire, and at the same time, I’d have time to get closer to Maxwell.
And see if this crush I had on him was the real deal after all.
