My hand curled possessively over his back and I suppressed a growl. I’d only known Felix a short time, but he didn’t strike me as the type of person to do anything to deserve being suddenly kicked out. He was kind. He stood up for me at the café, and seemed to do his best not to be a burden to anybody. I couldn’t imagine what he could have done to offend his ex-mate so badly.
“Tell me, Felix,” I said gently. “Please.”
A shiver ran through his body. “Um. I don’t know if you remember, but I told you what was wrong with me already.”
“There’s nothing wrong with you.”
“Yes, there is,” Felix insisted, an edge of frustration in his voice. “I’m infertile.”
“That’s not a flaw,” I growled. “It’s just part of who you are.”
“What use am I as an omega if I can’t bear children?” Felix cried. “I’m useless!”
My jaw dropped. Felix trembled violently on my lap before he got up and walked off.
With a jolt of panic, I followed the sound of his voice. “Felix, don’t go.”
“I’m not leaving, I just--” He bit back a sob. “I thought I could talk about this without breaking down . . .”
“Then break down.” I stood and made my way to the door, holding out my hand the entire time in case he decided to take it. “Come inside. Maybe you’ll feel better when you’re not out in the open.”
A moment later, I felt his hand slip into mine.
