Puzzled, Griffin turned to me.
“Skylar’s adopting the black kitten,” I told him.
Instantly Griffin’s face lit up with a huge grin. He clapped him on the back. “Skylar, that’s fantastic! What made you decide to keep her?”
“Well, when Lilith moves out with you two, I guess I didn’t want to be cat-less,” he said with a smug look. “Besides, I’ve grown to love all the little boogers.”
“You’re the best,” Griffin said. “Will we be allowed to come visit her?”
Skylar rolled his eyes and laughed. “Of course! What kind of uncle would I be if I didn’t?”
All this talk of Skylar being my baby’s uncle made everything feel much morereal. My nerves caught up with me as I thought about being in labor, having to push the baby out of me...
“Sky,” I said suddenly. “You’re gonna be there the day I give birth, right?”
His expression changed to a serious one. “Yes! Why are you even asking?”
“Just making sure.” A wave of bittersweetness hit me. “I think all the kittens going away is just making me emotional.”
“I see the pregnancy hormones are getting to you already,” Skylar remarked smugly.
I couldn’t deny it. “Ugh. I have seven more months of this shit.”
Skylar grinned. “Better get used to it now.”
“Shut up and take your kitten. What are you gonna name her?”
“Hm... I don’t know yet. Picking a name is hard.” He tilted his head. “Hey, what about you two? Have you thought about baby names yet?”
Griffin smiled. “Oh, I have. I’m not sure about Jake. We haven’t really talked about it, have we?”
“No,” I said. “I’ve been too busy checking out my baby bump.”
Skylar gasped. “Where?”
“Right here.” I grabbed his hand and put it on my belly.
Griffin shook his head but didn’t say anything. Meanwhile, Skylar looked sheepish. “Er, I don’t exactly feel anything. Sorry, Jake.”
“Everyone’s a critic,” I mumbled.
