In the room, I looked around but didn’t see anything out of the ordinary until Jake pointed at the pile of clothes on the floor. A fluffy white and orange tail was sticking out of it.

“Is that her?” I asked with a chuckle. “If so, she’s doing a bad job of hiding.”

Jake grinned. “Shut up, she’s doing amazing.” He nudged me. “Now hurry up and pick a name. I’ve already taken a million pics of her on my phone to show my co-workers, so I need a name to go along with them.”

“You’re quite excited about this cat, aren’t you?” I asked.

He blushed and furrowed his brows. “Yes, okay? I am.”

“Hm… To be honest, I kind of liked what Skylar was going for earlier,” I said in amusement.

“When he called her a demon cat?” Jake demanded.

“Yes.” I smiled at him. “We can call her Lilith. A sexually wanton demon of the night, murdering mice wherever she goes.”

“Wow,” Jake replied. “Just like me. Well, except the mouse part.”

I laughed, and then so did he.

“I like it,” he said. “Lilith it is. My sweet little killer.”

“Oursweet little killer,” I reminded him.

Jake faced me, his eyes shining. In that moment, there was no snark or sass inside of them - just genuine affection.
